hello,
I have decided to build a manual CVT for my next off road go kart. I have two different designs in my head, and will decide which one i am going to use soon. I plan on starting in a few months (once i am done working on my vehicles)

Anyways, i am either using a design similar to that on John Deere 314, or one like a snowmobile. Both will be manual, and controlled with a sliding lever. So, essentially it will be like driving a fast hydrostatic vehicle, where you can control the speed with either the throttle or CVT. I will take a picture of both designs and post them and then post my project when i get to building it.

Out of curiosity, does anyone here have experience with CVT's, and if so how do you like them?

Just use the CVT, making it manual would most likely turn into a huge failure. It would incredible hard to upshift, you would have to make it hydraulic.

I dont know if you have ever been around milling machines, but many use a manual type CVT to change the rpm, turning up the rpm is considerable harder than turning it down, and thats on a much smaller scale than any go kart CVT.

If you want a manual style transmission, i suggest a motorcycle engine.

Good luck with your endeavor. I'm sure it can be done. Not sure why you'd want that, though. I think it'd be a hemmorhoid to drive. If it's what you want, then by all means, go for it.
As for whether I like mine, I love it, it's great. I still prefer stirring my own gears, but this is a decent alternative.

Well, i think i will go with the design that is similar to the john deere 214 (not 314, typo). Apparently it is called a variator dive system. It uses a tensioner a twin variable pulley to act similar to a CVT/clutch combo. It is quite smart.
