I want to put a manual clutch on my go kart with a v-belt drive. I have the pulley for the engine side but I can't find a 10 inch pulley with a 1 inch bore, that is not made out of cast iron. I heard that the cast iron ones are like ticking time bombs, is this true?

You will probably want to look for a weld-together hub bushing and stamped pulley.

Cast iron pulleys are fine as long as you take measures to ensure it doesn't smack into a rock or something at 30mph. Then it will likely crack.

Die cast pulleys are what you REALLY want to avoid. They are made for fractional HP applications and can withstand very little abuse.

Thank you, I have found a pulley and hub.

So I have been doing some calculations on the pulleys I need and this is what i have. I want to use a 1.75 inch pulley on the engine, a 9 inch pulley on the axle, and I got a calculation of 5.14:1 ratio. I know I should at least have 6:1 but would it work. I am using 15 inch tires most of the time.
