MANUAL clutch... of sorts.

If you could have a manual clutch, would you?

Ah good point, I think i will try that when i have enough money on hand to try it. I just need 4 pillow block bearings 2 for rear wheel axle and 2 for the jack shaft. And that will cost alot for me because i don't order of the internet.

make a belt tensioner style clutch.

What is the best thing to source pulleys from? A old truck/car that uses v belts ( would they handle the stress from engaging / disengaging). I know machinery sheaves or any pulley made of cast are poor choices . I'm going to use it on an ungoverned GX340 with a jackshaft. Any recommendations? Advice?

i think you have a good idea and good drawings, but i think you should make the clutch shoes and drum more heavy duty than a hilliard's. if youre going to make all those other components, you might as well make your own clutch shoes and drum

i dont think a hilliard (steel clutch shoes) would like getting revved to 6,000 rpm then forced to engage. they get pretty hot as they are.

How are cast iron sheaves, typically sourced for machines, not any good. I have seen them outlast big machines they were put on.
Cast iron sheaves for a gx340, no problem. The belt thats another story.

Stamped steel, or cast iron pulleys would be fine. check out this site, very good prices on chain sprockets pulleys belts bearings etc. thats where i do most of my shopping. https://www.surpluscenter.com/powerTrans.asp?catname=powerTrans
