I just purchased a Minco grape escape for my young kids. Great shape and runs well except front wheels were not original. After 4 hours of fun the front wheel came off. They had washers on inside and bolt not tightened all the way so wheel would turn. Appears to be split rim with 4 bolts but "hub" was not bolted to rim but had small flange sitting between rims.

Can someone tell me what I need to buy for front wheels so they are safe for my kids to keep riding? Shouldn't I be able to snug down nut? They had a ball and are excited to get riding more as well as helping to fix it, this is just all new to me.

Hoping I didn't make a mistake on purchasing but like the size and limited speed for them to begin learning on. Once they get good at it and assuming they continue to enjoy it we will look for something that doesn't hug the bumps and has some suspension.

Thanks for any insight on this...looking forward to learning more and getting into this with my kids.

Post some pics, but sounds like you had Harbor Freight wheels.

You need to measure, but most likely, you need 5/8" ID wheels. There are several places to get quality, safe gokart wheels. GoPowersports, BMI, and others.

I will take some pics tomorrow. It is 5/8 I'd for bearing when looked at parts sheet. Parts sheet states a spanner I assume this sits between threaded axle and bearing to allow for nut to be tightened fully correct? I also assume since this one had hub with no mounting holes a hub should be attached to the split rims on inside rim then just mount. I did write bum couple days ago inquiring what needed hopefully will hear back soon. Thanks!

Here are 3 wheel choices that will work with your kart. Your tires, if they are good, should fit, too. You should have 4" wheels on the front. Typically, a nylock nut or similar locking nut is used on the axle. It should be snug, but not tight. Hope this helps!

.....Found this one if you don't mind a smooth tire. $10! You may have to check the length of the axle stub.

Thanks. I will contact bmi and look at steel one piece rim. I assume 2 bearings per rim. Do I need a spanner? Showed one in manco parts diagram.

Here is what they had on there. I appreciate the help.

Yeah those are just POS $5 hand truck wheels. It's actually pretty impressive that they lasted 4 hours. One bump, and they usually snap. The hub tube and flange is just spun together, not usually even welded.

Any of the afformentioned options would be better.

Updated wheels

New wheels on. Wish had gone with smaller axle but one thread past self locking nut when snug. Think they should work. Here's the kids new toy. Thanks for the input.

Yah 4 hours maybe on dirt. 1 hour on road. See my signature thread. had to modify my HF wheels to make them last an hour without snapping in half. After everyone screamed at me about getting them.

And then yes the high speed wheel bearings are much better then the HF wheel barrow ones.

Thank god you kids are okay. We are always telling people not to use the HF wheels.

There are "top lock" nuts available that are thinner, but it looks like yours will stay in place OK. Have fun!
When's Dad going to get a kart????
