I picked this up for free from a friend. It looks to be in decent shape, but the engine is not running. It's a 5hp tecumseh with a comet 20 series torque converter. I'd prefer to just swap it out with a 6.5hp predator. Are there any issues that I would run into with the swap using the original torque converter? Thanks

The only issue I've heard about is gas tank may hit back of seat slightly. Are you sure it is a 20 series on that kart? The one Dingo 5hp my brother had had a 30 series and the 8 hp I had a 40 series. Do not go by what is stamped on the cvt. Good luck.

i wouldn't worry about sawping out the engine for a 212 predator to much. it should bolt right up. wish i had friend's like yours. that is a nice gokart for free!!!!

Thanks, there seems to be a lot of space between the current gas tank and the seat, I know that doesn't mean a lot. I'm not sure its a 20. The only stamp I found on it was 20 P5. I'll run out and snap a pic in a few minutes.

He bought it for his son and was riding on the back with his son driving and was thrown off resulting in a major injury to his leg. He just wanted it gone and I was more than happy to haul it off for him.

Take the belt off if, one side looks flat and the other looks angled it is a 30 series. If both look angled it is a 20 if it has a 5/8 wide belt. If both look angled and has a 3/4 in wide belt then it is a 40.

that is a series 30 belt (assymetric that's why there's an indication of which side goes towards the engine)
comet 203589A to be precise..

Anyways.. it will not work with a series 20 TC.
what ou need is likely 12-13048 (comet 203578A) or bigger, since that belt looks too tight to be honest.
So please check the Center to Center distance and go by this list

PS you're sure it's a series 20 TC?
the driver very much looks like it'd be.. but the driven looks like being series 30 from here.
please remove the belt, and take a picture of the TC from behind the kart.

The driver is definitely 20 series. It was replaced along with the belt. I found the recipt in the box of original parts.

It looks like the driven is asymmetric, like what Sid described. 30 series.

So it appears that a 20 series driver was installed where it should have been a 30. I'm not sure why it was replaced. Does anyone see any reason the original on wouldn't work?

quite easy fix actually..

take the inner sheave of the old series 30 and install it with the rest of the series 20
(that's the only difference really)

And you have a complete series 30 TC.

Why it's a series20?, well someone ordered the wrong part, easy as that

Thanks everyone. I picked up the new predator engine today. Everything bolted up perfectly. I still have 4 inches or more between the seat and gas tank. The engine started on the first pull. All I need is a 3/8" bushing to space the driver unit out and a throttle return spring and she'll be ready to go.

Ok, I spaced the driver out to align perfectly with the driven. I put the belt on to take it for a quick spin. It was dark out so only a few minutes. It seems to take more rpms than it should to get the clutch to engage. When it does, it jerks forward. I also notice a slight fraying on the angled side of the belt. As Sid said above the belt seems too tight. My center to center measurement is 7 3/4" and the belt that's on it is for 6 5/8". Would the tight belt cause the high rpm engagement and jerk?

Yes the tight belt could cause all sorts of problems. Get the correct belt and while your at it disassemble the secondary clutch and make sure it is not frozen or cruddy anywhere. Good luck.

Ok guys. I feel like a bit of an idiot, but I took the center to center measurement in the dark with my phone flashlight and made a mistake. It was actually 6 5/8" so I do have the correct belt. I took the driver apart and lubed it with dry lube and all is well. I like the honda clone so much better than the tecumseh engines. I'm going to replace the 6.5hp tec on our other kart since I found a coupon in the paper today for $99.

So I have $120 in this kart, plus a little ford grey engine paint I already had that I painted the wheels with. He's a happy boy now.
