I'm not sure which one it is, to be honest. It does have a belt and chain, if that helps you at all.

Not knowing wether the drive is a clutch/tc. Could be a worn/burnt up clutch or a dirty tc/wore out belt. Do a cold and hot compression test on the engine and let us know what the readings are. Also is the B&S a flattie/ohv?

Phil, it has a torque converter. I just found that out today. The belt on it is shot so we are going to try to find a new one and replace it. Hopefully, that works.

The smoking and rough running makes me wonder if the engine is flooding. It may be that the the float was not set right or the choke is staying on.

Did the engine smoke before the carb was rebuilt?

I suppose the belt may be smoking from the slipping.

I don't think so. It sat for 5 yrs and we couldn't even get it to start so it got a new spark plug and new carb. It would still stall out after about 4 minutes of use, tho. Very annoying. Everyone keeps on saying my piston rings are shot, too, so I think I need to get those checked out, too.

Looking at the TC pic, the belt doesn't even look like the correct one. Make sure you get the right belt or you are still going to have problems

Regarding the engine stalling, some briggs motors have a low oil sensor which could be causing a problem for you. Disconnect if you do have one.

Its a magnatron system according the sticker on the recoil. No points or condensor. May need to clean rust off flywheel magnets.

Good thought though.
