Manco Dingo 285 found

As some of you may have read I went and checked Jed out a Dingo the other day. It was a 388, which is the larger frame dingo. While I loved the kart, the $500 price tag was too much considering I wanted to build and refurbish it. It had an original Briggs 8hp on it. The size fit an adult well.

Continuing my search I came across the smaller dingo, the 285. This one had a predator 212 on it with a cheap clutch. The frame was unmodified and didn’t have any rust on the frame. Original Manco wheels. I quickly got ahold of the seller tonight and he agreed to meet me. $250 and I took it home. I’m 5’7” and I fit in the kart, knees bent old school style

More than likely due to size of rear area I’ll build the predator and slap a 30 or 40 series on it depending on how far I build it. Frame will be stripped and repainted. This will be a project starting in a few months...need to finish the other ones first.

For the price I am pretty happy with the purchase. I’ll still be on the lookout for the larger frame dingo at an attractive price but this 285 will be great for now!!!

Great paintjob on that one lmao. Guess it's better than my dingo, rust brown or bare metal grey. I like smaller karts, less room to slide around and "cosier" imo. Idk, also the good old knees up, sat on an extended kart (like 16 inches) and it was wierd

Yah the paint job is comical for sure. I’ll sandblast it away soon enough. The floor pan is intact but it’s too thin for my liking. Looks like 20 or 22 gauge. I’ll probably end up replacing that with 16 or 18 gauge, and adding a piece of flatbar at the rear of the pan near the seat.

Need to find some new spindles with springs. New bearings. Etc. normal resto maintenance. It has huge 22” tires on it. The clutch that is on it doesn’t like that at all. But either way...$250 with a predator... I have no complaints.

22x11-8 and a 52, 54 tooth sprocket it comes with is pretty tall gearing.

Yes. Very tall. It’ll all be changed. Looks mean though with the huge tires. I wish a 301 or 420 would adapt easily. There used to be a guy who made a custom jackshaft mount that would allow a 22hp vanguard to fit. But I believe he is long gone. Jackshaft Johnny or something.

Took the engine off tonight. The throttle was rigged horribly. Only 3 bolts securing the engine. It must have been thrown together by some young kids.

Space is tight. No way to have the 212 gas tank fit without extending the motor mount plate rearward. I really don’t see how anyone could fit a 301 or 420 on one of these.

I think a stage 2 predator with some headwork will be the easiest/best solution. Thoughts?

I don't know about anything else but I got a gx160 to fit with tank with just a little bit of ajustment, I'll have to dig up a pic later
Although my kart is pretty messed up

I saw one where a guy used square tubing mounted to the plate, then bolted the engine to the tubing.

Yah I saw a post about that on a 285 also. If I understand correct basically bolt engine to tubing and use original plates to slide engine for chain adjustment. That is simple enough. I think tying the 2 tubes together might be a little better so you wouldn’t have to slide the tubes independently. And some grade 8 bolts due to the additional leverage applied to the bolts at mounting plate. This might be the simplest way to go. Might be more prone to wheelies farther back like that haha.

I bolted engine to tubes first. Then bolted tubes to mounting plate.
I sold this cart to my friend for his kids. He said they rode it non stop till they wore out the tc belt and put a hole in the tire. He never had issues with how the motor was mounted .

The lift on the engine was also for the tc .

Do you know if it’s 2” or 2.5” steel tube you used? If 2” I could get a piece of 2x6. What brake caliper is that?

Not sure what size tube I used . When I put it all together I had the motor and tc . I put the axle in the cart . Then put the motor on wood blocks to see where everything would work . I then measured the size And length of tube I needed . As for the brake caliper I used the replacement caliper for dingos with disc brakes .
