So, I took the go kart all apart to fix and repaint. After putting it together, I put the clutches on and new belt and find that the belt is trying to twist and is fraying the belt on the edges. Correct new belt, I also believe to have the shims in the correct place. I cant figure out why it is doing this now and didnt before I disassembled everything. Any help from anyone would be appreciated!

I never removed the jackshaft. I have a parts break down, that is calling for different thicknesses of shims behind the primary, looks to toal 1 1/16 of an inch. That seems like a lot to have the primary hang off the crank that far?

Two thin spacers behind the driven. If the driven goes in anymore, it will hit the chain! Any other ideas?

I am thinking the jack shaft is fine. I didnt remove it, it stayed bolted to the engine plate, along with the engine. The only thing I found strange when I got the kart was, somebody had put huge washers on the outside of the driven and the drive, I left those off, they shouldnt do anything on the outer hubs of the clutches. Lookslike I will need to pull the drive out to get better alignment. Any pointers on getting both sheaves lined up?

Make sure you have the belt on the proper way and not accidently flipped around. From the pictures I it looks as though it is on backwards, However I do need new glasses I just broke them. :censored:

Help with 40 series clutch!!

OK, so I have taken the go kart apart, painted and the kart is back together. How do the series 40 clutches line up? If I put the shims that where on that where there, the belt is sitting crooked when the engine isn't running. When started, the belt does not go straight between the clutches becuase the two clutches moveable sheaves are going in opposite direction! How do you align them, or is the belt always going to run crooked? Really needing help with this.! The kart is a 808-01 dingo. It could be a simple fix and I just never paid attention to the belt before! I have only had the kart for a short time! Thanks for any help!

Sorry about the second thread, I didn't mean to offend! I do understand your picture, but my driven is opposite of your picture, my moveable sheaves work in the opposite directions.

Sorry man, i didnt see the pictures of your setup when i posted, not intended to confuse you. You do have the reverse wound yellow spring.. follow what Half-breeder said ;)

Did I miss something? I dont know what halfbreeder said?

This is what he said

You are correct in saying your setup and the diagrammed setup are different... yours is easier to line up.

*First... ignore whatever you previously had(pre-painting) cause evidently going by that is confusing you.
*Next... remove ALL shims/washers/spacers from both, the driver AND the driven.
*Next... install the driven w/ the minimal amount of spacers, if you can get away w/ 'no' spacers, make it so.
*Finally... add spacers to the engine shaft to align the inner sheaves lip, (inner driven inline w/ inner driver sheave lips).

If by chance things 'still' dont line up... you didnt add enough shims/spacers, or you added too many, to the engine shaft.

Looking at your pics... your sheaves should line up w/ acouple washers behind the driver(primary)!

He also said that the belt is bidirectional

ok I had my mechanic/ fabricator look at the pics...
when it revs the clutch pushes itself closer to the motor. in pics 2 and 3 you have2-3 washers on the outside of the clutch, move those between the clutch and the motor...
