Specs: 22x11 rear tires.
60 tooth axle, 9 tooth jackshaft
72 link chain (#40 I believe)

Robin Subaru (10 HP- original engine but new carb)

New driven, new driver and new belt. (Center to center = 8 5/8” - correct belt)

Issue: Got the cart together and properly preloaded the spring. Things horribly slow with poor poor acceleration. Was creeping badly at idle but have that mostly corrected with new belt and readjustment of the engine/jack shaft. Makes a bad whining/whirling noise at start up- maybe still engaging the gearing?

I measured the center to center twice. 8. 5/8”.

The new driver doesn’t have the center brass bushing that the original had.

Ideas?

Forgot to mention that——. Update update- that one picture is from
The other day- where it shows (towards engine) —- THATS been corrected, the belt is now properly oriented towards the engine. My bad-

It’s a comet 40 series- with a reverse spring installed

With my 20” tires I used a 60/8 to get the acceleration I wanted. I’d agree you need more gear. I’m not saying that is the only problem though. How close is your chain to the backside of the driver? Check the back of the driver and see if it’s making contact and eating the metal, that could account for the noise. It happened on my predator.

Hey there! The chain is a good .5” from the back of the driven with zero signs of running- out the kart on the stand and it DOES NOT make the noise- only while on the ground. I ordered a 8 tooth for the jackshaft and will see how that goes—. Think the old robin engine is also weak and work at this stage. It’s the original engine and will mostly likely replace with a predator 420. Anybody done this type of swap?

I’ve found a aftermarket exhaust online for the robin Subaru but not any aftermarket air filter.

**Oh and the brakes are garbage- ordered new pads for the caliper (it’s been adjusted per spec) but will probably need to devise a way to attach hydraulic brake on the rear

I have a 607C that has 22x11-8 in the back and 60/9 gears just like you. I have a 212 Predator on it and I have no problem with climbing hill, acceleration, top end etc. Maybe there is something the matter with the drive or driven??.

Try jacking up the rear, removing the chain and see if the axle spins freely. If it does not, the axle bearings might be binding up due to the wheel/axle nuts being too tight. If you overtightened them, the bearings will bow inwards and bind up because the spacers are on the outside of the bearings.

yes the chain is the same on both. Its been jacked up- see above:

There is no noise when off the ground- noise goes away. No binding, free wheeling. I am going to install the 8 tooth on the jack shaft this week. Both the driven and driver are new- both disassembled and cleaned. Driven is properly preloaded.

UPDATE: 8 Tooth installed on Jack shaft. Not much of a change- dont feel a torque increase either. Went back to square one; tightened chain properly, removed and cleaned driven and driver, preloaded driven, installed and double checked proper alignment-removed and re-cleaned carb- fresh air filter- all reinstalled and went for another go with the 9 tooth on the jack shaft.

Measured speed with rudimentary speed app on phone -- 18 MPH. Went back to shop, installed 8 tooth --- 13 MPH.

At this point I think the engine is plain worn. I think a predator 420 will be the next go around. Thoughts?
