I just finished all the stearing components of my go kart and now I am gonna start working on the back half. I have a 6.5 HP Honda knock-off engine and 10" wheels, what sprocket size should I have on the clutch on the engine and on the wheels?

That's a good question but it depends on if you want a higher top speed or you'd rather have beter acceleration. You cant have both, but you could select a compromise somewhere in between.

Here's a gearing calculator you can use to see what top speeds you'll get using diferent sprocket size combinations: http://www.diygokarts.com/speed-calculator.html

(if your engine still has its govenor connected up, use 3600 as your RPM setting / just keep in mind that a higher top speed = less acceleration when taking off)

But what's a common sprocket size for a 6.5HP engine? Governed and ungoverned.

I got mine at 12 on the tourqe a verter and 76 i think on the axle and it goes around 27 not to bad it seems faster cause when you hit a bump the suspention in the back sucks so bad it kicks the rear end in the air and the front shocks are so weak it starts gettin scarey with the back bouncing lol

Well I have a briggs 5hp ungoverned engine on my manco cart. 12 on the clutch and 70 or 72 on the axel and i hit around 35-40. The kart feels extremely dangerous though! The speed was checked with a car driving side by side. **CAUTION** IF you REMOVE the governor do not go FULL throttle for extended periods of time, as the engine WILL BLOW!

On a briggs I pull the side cover off pull the white gear and then remove the governor arm and grind the flap off and reinsert it into the motor, I have never done a clone but here is a good video on a clone engine HERE

Just dont worry about the engine blowing up on you man. cause the only way it will is if your redlining it with no weight on it for like over 30 seconds. when i yanked my gov at first i was terrified of it cause i didnt want it to blow but now i know its not gona unless i act like a ****in retard. its like driving my dads 150 it has no tac so you need to tune your ear to figure out when the best time to shift is.

i pull my governor out of all my engines except for my new kart because i have my good briggs 5hp ungoverned engine on it temporarily, but do to the gear ratio clutch 12 to single wheel 76? and 4.10 tires you hear the engine over revving hard, and it wants to blow lol. so i dont recommend removing the governor on ANYTHING with 1 WHEEL drive or Small Wheels period. You are just asking for the motor to blow that way, because there is so little load.
