Loss of Power?

Hey guys,

So recently, I have done a couple things to my engine:
- relocate the gas tank
- added exhaust
- added air filter

As I was waiting for my exhaust and air filter to come in the mail, I decided to try to run the kart straight with no exhaust and took out the airbox and I noticed that there was barely any power when I stepped on the gas. It would literally only go max 5mph.

So I figured that there was no back pressure and today I installed the exhaust and airfilter and tried to run it again and still the same? I can't seem to figure why theres a lost of power.

I took a picture of the top to see if you guys can figure if i put some springs on wrong or if you see anything weird.
(the reason why I say this is because there is a long lever that connects all the way to the carb area and if I pull that back while the throttle is up I noticed there was a significant more power (keep in mind this was while it was on jackstands). I'm assuming this lever has something to do with the govenor and may not be the problem?

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Forget about jets and emulsion tubes.

Your problem is that throttle cable. Its not pulling the throttle open enough. You need to get rid of the angle-iron "guide" and get a proper sheathed cable. And anchor the end of the sheathing properly. Seriously, it's a wonder it opens the throttle at all

So how does that work exactly? Because it sounds exactly the problem. How come when i press down on the pedal it looks like its open all the way? So you saying switching over to the regular sheath cable should fix it?

Is that tiny little filter for your air filter, or is that a breather vent filter?

That cable won't last like that, it's going to fray and break. My bet is that it'll pull enough to open the throttle when the engine is off, but not when the engine is running and the governor is in action - based on your comment about pulling on the gov arm and going faster.

I'd strongly suggest a normal throttle cable, lots of ways to hook one up. See my yerf-dog thread for what I did.

Picture #4 (bottom row, left)-

I'm near certain that the longish spring on the left hand side of the pic is in the wrong hole. That hole is too big- but I am struggling to remember which hole it is supposed to be in. For now, try other nearby holes.

EDIT- Please reference the pic I took, and marked. You need to move where that spring is hooked. THEN, follow Jamyers' advice on a proper throttle cable. Cheers!

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! thanks so much, i think that solved it! after inspecting the original i noticed stepping on the gas never maneuvered the governor at all. Now with placing the spring in the correct hole it looks like it made a huge difference. I was only able to run it on stands in my garage for now since its too late to be disturbing my neighbors, but right off the bat i see the difference again!

thank you!

Glad you got that fixed!

But could you please, for my sake, get a real throttle cable? I'm losing sleep just thinking about that... and I'll bet you'll find that you've got more better throttle control as well...

For some reason i thought my previous reply went through but i guess not...thanks for the tip too. I ended up changing into the sheath cable and that also made a big differnece too. Thanks again
