Got my sons kart going new axle 3/4
With 3/4 hubs and the other day it through the chain.
After looking at it I noticed the key on the sprocket was missing.
Just noticed the set screw is still there.
And there is another hub for the brake disc.
Screw is still there and the key can be slid right out.
I expected the key to not be so loose.
What would you guys recommend to stop this.
Thanks
Mike

Ahh yes the loose key... Almost had 2 bad incendents with thrown keys.... Still have a flat spot on my boot...

Usually you just put 2 shaft collars on each side... That will keep it contained...
Another method is to use a longer key and put one or two pipe clamps on either side, clamping the key to the shaft and thus containing the hub.

You could put some loctite on the set screw so it don't come loose. Put a hose clamp on each side (if possible) to keep the key from sliding out. You could also punch a couple divots at the keyway, on each side, so it can move. .......

I was thinking about some hose clamps seems a little extreme to have 2 collars
For each hub.
What type of pipe clamp where you thinking of
Thanks again
Mike

I thought the set screw was gone but when I took it apart I noticed the set screw was still there and tight really tight

you can take a sharp centerponch and centerpunch the key in a few spots to hold it in the keyway also you can get oversize key stock from mcmaster carr for a tighter fit

So now I can't get the hob off the axle
I'm assuming the hub spun on the shaft with the set screw ran in tight
And created a groove or a bur now I can't get the hub to slide
It spins but won't budge and it's off by about 3/4 from where it was.
Thinking about trying to press it out if not I'll have to cut the hub off and get another one
And maybe another axle
Any ideas anyone ?

Ahh yes..... well least it spins......its not welded then.
I would align the keyways, and press it off in that position. if not effective enough..... cut it.....

After you remove the shaft.... polish the bore well, make sure to get any barbs that will hang up on the next use....

Same exact thing happened to my Karts hub and Axle. For the same reason.

You should be able to get it off with just a little finesse (and a hammer) The metals make barbs and or burs, that tend to stick. PITA but not a huge "throw it all away" deal.
