Looking to upgrade wheels on Coleman KT196

Hey there guys,
New guy here and wanting to make the rear end wider on my sons KT196. I originally thought it would be as simple as putting a spacer on the hubs to make the tires track wider but I see the rims are directly mounted to the axle. After searching every where, I’m looking for guidance on where I can find 18T 23.5mm hubs that will fit on the axle or plan B where I can just get a whole new axle from some where that is wider or has a more common spline set up so I can put different rims on it. Open to getting something custom made if need be. Any help is appreciated.

Any of the major kart supply shops sell axles in various diameters and several lengths. Start by measuring the diameter of your existing axle. Also welcome to the forum. Anything that we can help you with, this is the right place.

18T 23.5mm hubs that will fit on the axle

If you're saying the axle has 18 splines on the end to fit into splined hubs, a new axle of same with longer length would be hard to find. I'm seeing a standard 1" solid axle with keyways to fit standard smooth-bore hubs with matching keyways in your future. Of course, if the sprocket, brakes, and bearings don't fit that, then they and the hubs would have to be replaced also.
Wider track without moving the axle bearings out also could be a weak spot for you, more susceptible to bending the axle. Here's just one of several sites where you can see what's readily available for axles........................

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Been busy with work so the project got put on the back burner for a bit. Starting to tackle it again. Basically I’m just looking to put bigger and wider tires on different rims. Seems straightforward but I can’t seem to find rims that will mount to the stock axle. I will have to dig into the axle link in the previous post to see if that is an option.

Knowing the diameter of your current axle could save you the expense or the need to replace bearings, providing it is a standard or popular size.

With the amount of meat left on those tires I wouldn’t worry about it until they were bald.

Following this, trying to do the same. I was able to put golf cart wheels on a yerfdog with aftermarket hubs. Hoping to do the same with the Coleman but can't find an 18 spline hub anywhere. Thought about just cutting out a keyway and using same hubs I used on the yerfdog, or even cutting out the center spline section and fitting it to the hub.

Just buy a new axle with keyways cut and hubs. It will last longer and be more reliable in the long run!

I KNOW THIS IS AN OLDER POST BUT I CAME UP WITH A SOLUTION, SO WHAT I DID WAS I BOUGHT A CHEAP SET OF 400EX HUBS, I HAD TO COME UP WITH SOME SORT OF BUSHING TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SPLINES... AFTER SOME TRIAL AND ERROR I HAVE BEEN RUNNING THIS SETUP NOW FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS( DONT LAUGH) I TOOK THE 400 EX HUBS AND HEATED THEM UP IN A TOASTER OVEN FOR SOME TIME I IMAGINE YOU COULD DO IT WITH A TORCH AS WELL, BUT I BOUGHT A COUPLE OF THE GREY WELL PUMP FITTINGS (COUPLER) AND I PRESSED THEM INTO THE HOT HUB, IT WILL OOZE OUT AND NOT LOOK REAL PRETTY BUT YOU WANT IT TO CONFORM TO THE HUB SPLINES. THEN I QUENCHED THEM IN A BUCKET OF COLD WATER TO SET THE PLASTIC. I THEN MADE SPACERS TO MAKE THE BACK SPACING WHERE I WANTED THEN TO BE AND USED THE AXLE NUT AND A OVERSIZED WASHER AS A SORT OF PRESS. HEAT THE AXLE UP ENOUGH TO MELT THE PLASTIC AND SHOVE THE HUB ON AND USE THE AXLE NUT TO TIGHTEN IT DOWN, THEN QUENCH THE HUB. AXLE AGAIN TO SET THE PLASTIC. WORKED VERY WELL FOR ME AND HAS BEEN GOING STRONG SINCE, BUT I CAN BOLT ANY HONDA ATV TIRE AND RIM COMBO UP NOW, PLANNING AN TAKING THE REAR RIMS AND BORING IT OUT TO FIT THE FRONT WHEEL BEARING/ SPACER AND USING THE ORIGINAL REARS ON THE FRONT. ITS PRETTY HILLBILLY BUT ITS NOT WRONG IF IT WORKS RIGHT.... ALL IN ALL GOT ABOUT 50 BUCKS WRAPPED UP INTO IT AND SOME TIME IN FIGURING OUT WHAT WORKS... DONT GET IT TOO HOT, OR THE PLASTIC WILL JUST GET EVERYWHERE, BUT WHERE YOU WANT IT. ALSO NOTE, I JUST USED A PROPANE TORCH TO HEAT THIS STUFF IT DOSENT TAKE ALOT OF HEAT TO GET THE PLASTIC TO MOVE.

Thanks for sharing all this. I’m going to try and do a very similar version. How are your plastic bushings holding up?
