Where would you ride the kart, are you looking for a fun/yard kart for a racing kart, and what size are you?

thanks kieran(had a bit of spare time lol). race karts are expensive! you can get one used for an ok price though. the choice is up to your needs, size, engine, type, and brakes are the main variables.
If you wish to do amateur races, you will most likely need a production frame and be required to meet SOME requirements for safety concerns. If you just want to scoot around and have fun, some pipe and a welder will be most of what you need. I would get a parts kart to recycle parts and save money. You will still get that feeling of "I made this" because you built the frame and attached all of the goodies.

tag karts are expensive! 1600 will get you a cheap one! they look like fun though!

Mid 90's to early 2000 race karts with Yamaha KT100 engines are usually the best bang for the buck.
Not sure what part of Oregon your in but here's one that looks pretty decent for $700: http://portland.craigslist.org/yam/mcy/1934893522.html
You should start watching the craigslist ads from all the towns you'd be willing to drive to for a bargain. Lots of guys are selling off their race karts now a days. I bought an 1990's dual engine Dino brand race kart with a KT100, starter and stand for $100 a while back. It needed lots of work but my point is there's lots of bargains out there.
Many kart tracks require new racers to start out in beginner/KT100 classes for awhile before moving up to the TAG or Shifter classes. Some tracks dont even allow older race karts to compete. If you wanna race Id suggest you research your tracks rules before buying any kart.
