Looking to put a 16hp Duromax electric start engine on a custom made gokart, but want to switch it from a clutch system to a CVT system. My wife and I have found a torque converter kit that fits the crank shaft but says it can only be used on 8hp to 13hp engines.

My question is is it safe to use this converter kit on a 16hp engine will it still work properly or is there a better converter kit that can be used?

The converter setup you have posted is just rated for a 8 hp up a 13hp engine you need to find one rated for a 16hp engine , and your also going to need a jackshaft.

That's a small kart, it just needs the right size engine. Nothing wrong with a 6.5-7 hp engine and a 30 series torque converter (TAV2 or equivalent copy), worst case scenario you just move over the axle sprocket a little bit to align with the jackshaft sprocket and have a brand new engine that bolts to the existing mount.

212cc predator, Honda GX 200 or equivalent clone are good choices.

You asked for advice, and I think this is actually important to listen to because a large block engine is wider, taller, and longer. I notice that even the 196cc greyhound smaller block engine on there right now had to have the gas tank relocated in order for it to fit. You cant make it fit, unless you scoot it back some, but then its hitting the brake disc/lever, then you gotta raise it, and its hitting the frame every-time you go over a bump.

Save yourself the hassle and buy the $100 TAV2 and a $100 predator engine and call it good. It will have plenty of power, and speed for the kart and you wont have to chop/weld etc...

Edit: if the 6.5 greyhound works, why not just keep it and only spend $100 o n the TAV2 and have way more speed and torque?

Hey, sorry just now getting around to being able to check out my post.

Thank you guys for all the great information! Let me explain a bit where I'm coming from, and a little history of this Kart for a bit so you know where i'm coming from.

I'm going to stat off by saying - I'm not very mechanically inclined.

I bought this Kart after it had sat in someones shed for around a decade for $100. The engine was in pieces that went on it, but I " knew a guy "who could get it running. He mounted the current setup on it like it is, after cutting the old one off and welding / configuring it for it's current setup.

It ran well for my young child for the next few months, but was VERY slow to start moving with an adult ( 230lbs ) in it.

The pull start broke on the engine, and in frustration I parked it under a tarp until now.

The reason I was looking at such a large engine ( the 16hp engine ) was I figured it would be needed to pull a larger fellow like myself. Is this not the case if I were to go with a CVT clutch setup rather than the centrifugal clutch that is on it?

You folks also mentioned a base plate. I've searched on Ebay - is this the one your speaking of?

What purpose does that serve? Allow me to line up the CVT with the rear sprocket better I'm guessing?

Please forgive my ignorance, as I'm completely new to the idea of small engines / ratios / transmissions etc.

It let's you slide engine back and forth to adjust chain tension. Fit your chain on the closest position, then push engine the other way, to tighten chain. Then bolt motor down tightly....EDIT the TC is a huge improvement over the cc, for a big tire, off road type kart like you have. Buy a good tc and do a mild hop up on the current engine. You'll be smiling........

By just switching to a 30 series and keeping your engine. It will accelerate fast and not have this slow to start/burning up your clutch feel. No need to get a bigger engine. Difference between centrifugal clutch and torque converter is night and day.

Awesome :) thank you guys for the information.

I'm pretty sure I will run into other road blocks as my progress on it continues. Will stick around for updates lol
