Location of engine

I have a golf cart im puting an engine on, it would be easy if I could put the engine behind the axle, I have a friend who says puting the engine behind the axle with sprocket on it will not work. Is this true, do I have to put the engine in front?

It will Function just fine.
I do not know if it is best for weight balance etc.
But mechanically it is not an issue.

I put one in my 92 Ezgo. As a proof of concept, it is bolted to the axle with muffler clamps. It sits behind the axle. It's an electric to gas conversion too. How many teeth on your differential socket?

The sprocket I added is either 12 or 14 tooth, with 12 on the clutch. The ratio overall is about 12 to 1
