LMM's Old Gokart!

Ok. So I got this gokart from a friend of mine about 3 years ago. It was a single-wheel drive right from the motor to the tire. I blew about two sets of new bearings out of the rear wheel then on the third set I exploded the hub that the sprocket and brakes go on. Bummer right? Why not just get a new hub right? WRONG! The hubs aren't made anymore. Project is a goner save it for later if someone else wants it. (note this was 3 yrs ago). Now I am coming back to this. I will take a differential out of a RER mower that {had} a peerless 700, will make axles right length and will make that fit on my gokart. All I really need to do is get a rear-axle set-up and move the motor to the right side of the frame.


I don't know what kind of kart it is, I found a sticker on the floor-boards but I have to scrape the paint off to get to it. It would save me the trouble if someone could give me a name of what brand it is.

I think i would put a shifter kart axle on it so you would have unlimited gearing options or a race kart axle. And i like it ! Its small and simple.

I dont think that the chassis will be able to support the live axle with out extensive modification and reinforcement to the frame. At which point it will become a whole new kart, and one might aswell as get a more promising candidate in the first place.

That is, maybe you can find a tube large enough to fit a live axle inside
(has been done on several karts.. even the more recent drift kart has the live axle running in a tube)

That way the integral structure would remain the same,
AND you'd end up with a live axle.

Also you wouldn't need to care about the brakes and sprockets since it'd all be where it is now.

Yeah I was thinking a lawn mower differential (like this: http://www.peerlessgear.com/node5380.aspx?nid=300843) except mine has 5/8 axles. They would be able to fit through the tube, then I can cut out a small section of the tube for the sprocket to stick out. The brakes on mine are also mounted on the sprocket so I wouldn't have to worry about that.

Does anyone know what kind of kart it is?

Might be a Manco with a missing scrub brake...

But it's hard to tell

could be almost anything (Carter, kartco, even a mantis perhaps *shrugs*)

If I had to make a guess, it'd be Manco because of the seat.
I see if I can narrow it down to a model number..

I was thinking Manco too... (steering wheel)...but wasn't seeing enough to say...although the hoop and steering linkage looked right......

The thing that doesn't look right is mainly the missing brake
(well, to me at least)
Also, the missing pedals doesn't make it easier to call Manco right away but that's minor compared to the brakes

But I'm quite confident it's a 400 now...

If you use a 100 series axles I highly suggest some support bearings on the axles, at least one close to the diff, it is aluminum and the bushings could wear out making the hole carrier junk. You could just make extended axles to the diff (?) and pillow blocks to support it.

I changed my mind on the peerless 100 differential. I found a 3/4'' rod (cold-rolled) will this be strong enough if I run it on the inside of the tube? Would the ID of the tube be 3/4'' or 5/8''? If it's 3/4'' then I'll install a grease fitting or two then run the axle right thru there and keep the motor on the side that it is on and make the chain go to the axle instead of the tire/rim/hub. Good enough??

Ummmmm- NO! That makes absolutely no sense.....To run a live axle you need bearings....So you either run pillow blocks or use a tube either big enough for the bearing od or increase it at the ends.....something in the neighborhood of 1 5/8"?

Maybe you should look around here a little bit and get a little better understanding of what to do......

That should work...

That's a question only you can answer by measuring it...

IIWM, I'd still use the wheel hub to hold everything, I don't think you'll have enough exposed axle to add everythink individually...

I definally agree with those guys, maybe you wanna just start over and remove the tube, and do live axle/pillow blocks on the frame? Seems like a lot better option IMO

Ummm- That's kinda the other side of the coin....the drop of the second shoe.....it's not a live axle kart....and I don't know if the OP even has considered the pros and cons of a live vs. dead axle set-up......
