Live Axle

Actually Live axles are not as hard as you think.

For pillow blocks (if you are for sure this is the route you want to go) I personally prefer Pillow blocks over the hanger style of Live Axle Setups. I would check around locally first and see if anyone sells quality pillow blocks close to you. I have noticed that for me it is cheaper to get them on Ebay. I can get two of the exact same brand for half of the cost of the ones I could buy locally. What I do is slide the pillow blocks onto the axle first and then mark my hole locations. Then I use drill lube with a quality stepper drill bit. Make sure your axle is straight and square on your frame!!! Use a tape and measure several times before drilling. Now all you have to do is determine Cent. Clutch, TAV, or Torque Converter like a Series 40 (like I use) or many other choices from Comet.
I bought my current 1" diameter live axle from BMI. They custom made it for me because they did not stock the length I needed.

Are you using a Cent. Clutch or a TAV setup with jackshaft?? This information would help with anyone wanting to advise you on how to run your sprockets to your live Axle.

Where to get the parts... This forum offers several good suggestions such as MFG supply, and many others. I personally have used Barhost Manuf. or otherwise known as BMI on Ebay. I have bought parts from them for several of the karts I have built.

While this is a relatively old post, i am bumping because I found the information useful. I had an additional question though; after looking at pictures of live axles, what keeps the axle from sliding left and right in the pillow blocks?

I can only assume that the locking collars come separate from the axle itself? can someone post pictures?

Most axle bearings have a locking collar with grub/set screws built in

LOL! I was totally about to defend the stance of keeping old threads alive, and how it does have its benefits, but the third paragraph into it I talked myself out of it :p So I deleted my philosophy and posted this instead :D

Keeping old threads alive is ok but, this one has been dead that long it's completely decomposed...

It's better to reference a thread than revive it...
