Lead-Acid go-kart AC vs DC

So for a university project we have to create a electric go-kart that can be built by high-schoolers for a high school race. After doing research we are kind of split on AC or DC for the motor. Would a AC motor be too complicated for a high school team to put together, or would it's advantages overcome that aspect. Also we are using Lead-Acid batteries which sound like they last longer on AC.

The Batteries are lead acid The motor is what would be AC, and you would need a converter.

Unless you want to spend thousands of dollars, I would use a DC motor.
