So I sent my 4 banger Camry block off to get decked... got it back a few days ago and after unwrapping I noticed one big thing: they decked it incorrectly.

Lazy bastards threw it on one of those large belt sanders. Quick, dirty, and leaky. Surface finish was similar to that of a belt sanded piece of wood, rough with high and low patches and the occasional stray (deep) scratch. Lines leading from one cylinder to the next. I'm running ~25psi and using a metal layered gasket. You see the problem?

And I just HAD to hone and perfect the piston/wall clearance before this, as well as swap the core plugs.

Now I'm betting they're going to have to redeck it... and I already coated my piston crown... positive deck height + boost = problems. They better own up to this sh!t.

Thats f'd up. I'd get them to fix it or replace the head and never go there again lol. Anyhow, sounds like you're building one hell of a sleeper.

Is it flat? The first pic looks like it isnt, right by the water jacket hole or is that a finger mark, either way it doesnt look smooth. Maybe get it looked at by another shop before you go take it back.

Any machine shop that uses a belt sander to deck an engine block shouldn't be in business. I'd take it back to them with your recorded compression readings and demand your money back and for them to pay for any damages. If you cant reuse the head gasket, they should be paying for that too. if they don't if they don't fix it, report their bad business practices to the Better Business Bureau. Hopefully the block hasn't been hacked to death. Then take your money, and find a REAL machine shop.

Tried to play it off as our fault over the phone. Lard *** of an owner doesn't even know sh*t about machining, kept calling his mill a broach. Proceeds to call us cheap for trying to get "free work" done we previously paid for. Claims to have built "many motors with MLS gaskets with the sander". Drags my block out to his shop and tells us to get the hell off his property, and he isn't paying **** for the now-sticking-out-of-block pistons to get shaved down, nor the coatings. Said to come back Friday for it.

Picking up my block this Friday. Bringing my mains, crank, rods, and pistons down to check his ****astic machine work.

Still pondering on filing a 'suit for the pistons and coatings, which I now have to remove to shave the face down (I'm running lots of BOOST. That stickout is giving me extra CR I REALLY don't need right now, as well as dragging my ring lands closer and closer up.)

At this point, I think you can safely expect your block to come back in several pieces. What a schmuck.

In fact, is there any reason (other than having to source another block) that you can't just leave him with it... Forever... ? I would.

Already did a crapload of work to make it work for my application, wall clearances, freeze plugs, some oil pump/gallery mods. Believe me, if I had a viable alternative I would've taken it. If it comes back worse than before, or shoddily done to the point that I have to replace it, it's game on.

What the f**k. That guy sounds like a total a$$. There is a reason you pay good money to these sorts of people- to get a proper job done.
Why would anyone use a sander to deck a block?

I hope you get it sorted.

Yeah, if I ever took a block/head to a machine shop to get milled/ground down and got that back I'd threaten to sue if they didn't do it properly for free, whether or not that meant they had to buy a whole new one. A random high schooler could have done a better job in 20 minutes on a bench mill.

Looks like their main business is installing "rebuilt" engines, my guess is to mostly car dealers so they can unload them. Their picture gallery is funny - why would you feature a rack of old pistons/rods and cranks, and not your new CNC milling machine? Hmmm...

I'd still be calling a lawyer.

I like how they use the AT&T logo for their website icon :roflol:

But then again, the whole website is fairly poorly done.
