buy a replacement key, or, if its an older one, you could use a small flat tip screw driver, but i recommend getting a replacement key. On the battery, 6V, id say around 300cca. I don't know the engine, but most lawnmowers are 6V. A lot of the older ones are 12V though, I need engine specs to be for sure though. Got the model?

12v... you mean the older ones are 6v. But i've never seen a production lawn tractor with a 6v system like an old farm tractor.

slideways, where are you from? Most, nearly all, of the new riding mowers are 6V. The older ones ran a 12V system. I started my engine experiences from rebuilding mowers for people. They switched from 12V to 6V to save on expenses. They were cheaper to make and still could be used for just as much. I completely restored a 1967 John Deere 112. Had the hardest time trying to find the right wiring harness for it, that how i got all my inform. I just swapped it over to a 6V system.

Any auto parts store (WalMart, too) will have lawn tractor batteries. One size pretty much fits all. I personally have not seen a 6 volt lawn tractor.

yeah, you can buy replacement keys for that at any local mower shop or TSC.

and toystory, yes you are right, you have not seen many garden tractors with 6V systems because garden tractors and riding mowers are different. Garden tractors are used as a working "tractor". They need the extra battery power to use for an extra PTO system. A lot of people think Garden tractors and riding mowers are all the same. Well, in most sense, yes, they are. But, garden tractors are....well.... i don't really wanna say "more of a heavy duty" tractor, but they are. They are used more for work. If you are like me, well, you don't really care, you'll use your mower for anything as long as it gets the job done.

By the looks of it, that is an older mower so that may be a 12V system. If it is old enough, you can look on the light casings/lenses, and tell the year. is there an SAE number on your light casings/lenses?

Okay- let me rephrase- I have not yet seen ANY lawn- or garden-tractor with a 6v system. Not saying they don't exist, just haven't seen one. Been through several. I do tend to interchange the terms "lawn" and "garden" because most folks DON'T know the difference.

ok so if i go to WalMart tonight, what size would i get?

is there a way to bypass instead of the replacement key?

If you want to basically rig it, you can use a small flat tip screw driver. Although, I do not recommend this, it is just an option. Keys are cheap buddy, just go get one. The screw driver is just a quick trick.

yeah, I understand what you mean. Like, I don't care when people call a mower a garden tractor, because honestly, I use to do the same thing until I learned. Its not a major thing at all. You don't have to know the difference to use the dang thing, so why really does it matter, right?
