Has anyone used a clutch from a lawnmower that is designed to allow for engagement of the cutting blades on a go kart? If you have please let me know how well it has worked and how big your kart is.

Its been discussed a few times i believe, and what it all comes down to is that even if it would hold up, there's really no way of slipping it so it would just be on or off. I don't know of anyone who has actually tried it though, so maybe you could somehow use a rheostat to slowly give it current to allow some slippage.

Um. wrong. You can most certainly make the cluth work. My lawn mower has a lever that engages the blades. When you puch the lever forward, the clutch engages and the blades spin. When you want the blades to stop, you pull the lever back. SO, is talking about a kart, when you want to drive, push the lever forward. If you want to stop and idle, pull the lever back. Seems like it would work just fine. Imagine the blades are the wheels. If the engine doesnt die when the blades stop turning, it wont die when the wheels stop turning.

That would be a belt slip type clutch with mechanical pully system. there are different ways to do this crap that being one of them.

Or maybe your thinking about it differently? I was thinking that he was wanting to use an electromagnetic PTO clutch like many of the better lawn mowers use. If he wanted to use a belt slip clutch then of course he could, he wouldnt even need to use a lever he could simply make it spring loaded, and use a clutch pedal.

i think it will be a mechanical clutch, have yet to see the mower but judging by the age it will probly be a mecanical clutch

its all in the wording. when you say lawn mower clutch i automatically think of electric PTO as Kaptain also was thinking and he is correct, its either on or off unless you could rig a reo up. the type 02 is talking about is NOT a clutch and is a simple belt tension design and would work on a go kart but you dont need a old lawn mower to rob parts off of. it just needs a pully and lever to engage but would be a hassle on a cart as constant pressure, in my opinion, would be hard to maintain without a latch system of some sort and that could get hairy.

well considering that the engine is coming from the lawnmower we already have a lawnmower to rob parts from. I think i will try to use what is already on the mower for now.

How are you going to overcome the vertical shaft? or is it an older garden tractor with a horizontal shaft?

A twisted belt will be tested as a means of transfering the rotational energy, but a gearbox may be needed

go with a gear box... what kinda tranny or transaxle is in the lawn mower? you might be able to beef that up and use that.

Many people believe a twisted v belt will work, but im very skeptical. That method is used on my snapper with a 48" deck, and the belts do not last very long.

Corvairs used a twisted belt design to drive the generator, they held up fairly well but that was only like a 2 or 3 HP load. Maybe multiple wider sized V-belts with dual or triple pulleys would hold up on a kart with a vertical engine. Noram sells dual and triple pulley type clutches.
