Welp, since I got that Briggs running I got free off the side of the road, my brain has been churning thinking about what I can do with it. My neighbor smoked his engine in his rider a couple months back and I helped him rebuild the fuel pump on a new one he got and got it running for him. I txted him yesterday to ask what he wanted for just the chassis/steering/front axle and rims/tires (front). I said I'd remove his trans and engine and he could sell those and make some $$$. He said, pull the stuff and the rest is yours. Cool.
Tonite I stripped it down to bare bones leaving just steering intact. I pulled the mower deck brackets, idler pulleys and clutch hardware, wiring, and miscellaneous undercarriage junk it won't need.
Having built a racing tractor before, I am aware that I need to do something about that front axle pivot. I may weld it solid or just make a pin hole that I can run a bolt through to lock it solid. You get going too fast with these and the front end shimmy is unreal.
My plan is to mount the engine under the seat area or in front of the seat a bit as low as possible. I plan on putting pillow block bearings on the old trans mounts and running another 3/4" axle like my build off machine. I have plenty of 3/4" axle wheels lying around here to use. I love how light these tin frames are when you remove all the mower crud off of them. I'd love to do a TAV2 on this but with the engine having a shaft for reverse (tiller engine) I don't think I'd be able to mount it up. Centrifugal clutch will be fine. I'd like to run a #40 chain on this one too.
Any cons to running a caliper on the axle sprocket as a brake setup? Or should I run a sprocket/hub/drum setup like my build off machine? I want to be under $150 on this build all said and done.
