You talking about my pic?

Sorry mate, but it does work. No slip at all when you let the clutch out. It's only a 3.5hp 2-stroke.

DW, I didn't think it would work either, but it's the only way I could get 8:1 reduction without a jackshaft (and it still had crap acceleration!)

We use those on windmills and other things to get extremely low gear reduction. Works great.

A little more progress today, finished up the clutch linkage.

Plan A on the pedals (recycled bicycle pedals) didn't appeal to me, so I made some out of some stainless steel flat stock I had laying around. Added a bumper extension ahead of the front axle to protect the tires and feets and things from frontal collisions, and added a stub of round stock on both sides for pedal pivots.

The clutch pedal has an extension under the pivot for leverage, which pushes a rod, which goes to a

bellcrank which converts the push from the pedal into a pull on the clutch cable.

Also moved the engine ahead about an inch to get the proper initial tension on the belt and give me a bit more clearance for the clutch idler.

Next step is to set up the starter, extend the oil drain, rig the gas tank and hook up the throttle so I can test drive the clutch. If all is well, I'll finish welding the engine mount and start on the brakes.
