lawn tractor dif and gear box

What do you think about using a lawn tractor dif and gear box for Neutral/Reverse/Forward on a kart (420 cc Predator)? There's one at the local crap yard and they want way too much for it, but I was thinking it would be a pretty sweet addition to the arachnid. I'm worried it would be sloppy (used), similar to the old VW bus I once owned and maybe under built for that size engine.

Part of it's suitability would depend on the make and model. Some are more durable than others. IF you have a good one, you'd need to "Race-Prep" it. The other consideration is that most units are designed to work with a vertical shaft engine, and I'm fully prepared to assume that your engine is a horizontal shaft.

Toy - nailed it, horizontal shaft. The gear box looks pretty beefy and it would be pretty awesome to have reverse on this kart. So I might look into this a little more. Seems like one could figure out a simple transfer system form horizontal to vertical. Wish I had a machine shop.
