It was either a "UTLT"(Utility Lawn Tractor)- Thing (shamelessly stolen from Toystory) or a offroad/mudding thing... I choose... offroad/mudding thing. :D

Its got a 10hp Tecumseh, in dire need of a carb, or atleast the part where the needle valve seats as that seems to be my problem.
I found a briggs carb, and launched the stupid thing out if it so it does the same thing.... doah. However, I have a 2nd 10hp Tec that I might be able to get what I need from... not getting my hopes up as it looks like someone took a big ole nasty ole watery ole greasy ole poop in the thing... :ack2:

Plan for the moment is to get it running, and add a brake and gas pedal and rewired... maybe put a smaller pulley on the transaxle.

Question though, would 15-20mph be unreasonable to try to get out of this thing?

With stock braking and steering components, I would not suggest you shoot for speeds that high.

I did tell you that the UTLTV has a name now, right? MULE. Mobile Utility and Light Extrication... ;)

:iagree: but, not an unreasonable speed...

Admit it, you came up with the name then the acronym, right?

Well, both the name and acronym sorta came simultaneously. I was going to call it Scout, but the name didn't really fit the job description.

About the brakes... I had a thought about putting a disc brake below the pulley on the transaxle... if theres room anyways, Ill have to take a closer look...
I dunno... whats a good way to upgrade on the cheap side?

Major steering upgrade will come when it gets suspension...
:cheers2:

If you can find room in there, sure. Maybe weld a hub to the pulley, and mount the rotor to it. Might be possible to weld a rotor right to the original rotor, using it as a hub.

I guess thats a possibility... I will look into that.

At some point I would like to get some more aggressive tires... 60+ $$$ just for one at tractor supply. :ack2:
I hope I can do better than that!

So Im trying to get the twin running... battery is dead so I hooked it up to the Jeep with jumper cables... and after fiddling with a few "safetys" I can get it to turn over, however it only turns about 1/2 revolution then stops, then turns 1/2 then stops...

Whats up with that?

Also, is there anything special about the flywheel nut on these engines? Im contemplating replacing it with a different one so i can more easily mount a pull start thingamajig on it...

{EDIT} Gona put things on hold untill "THE SHED" (lol) is finished.. to a point anyways.

Check the usuals first- connections, grounds, etc. Could be a weak starter or the bushings in the starter need oil. Could also be the compression relief- check valve lash.

if your crankshaft has the extended nose, you can use an OEM starter clutch and recoil. Or, you could use the spare pulley and rope trick I borrowed from one of the lawn tractor guys. As a final option, you could adapt a starter clutch and recoil from another breed of engine.

Well, I did take out one of the plugs and it turned over fine...
{EDIT} Oh, how do I go about checking valve lash on it? I found some videos for an OHV engine, but this one isnt.
Thanks.

Part of me thinks it might have the wrong plugs, when we got it one of the plug wires was off and had another plug in it, I did find what I assume to be an old coil from this engine... not sure what my dads uncle was doing to it....

yes, I want to do something similar to what you did. Id like to do it a bit different though. I was thinking about replacing the original flywheel nut with a long one, so then I can stick a piece of threaded rod in it. I would have another nut welded to a pulley that would go on the threaded rod.
Hope that makes sense. :idea2:

On another note... can these engine run with only 1 cylinder?
Not that I would want to, just curious.

Interesting...

Now about this engine, what/where is the compression relief?
Possible thats causing my issues?
There was a couple times where the engine wanted to kickback the other way. When I took one of the plugs out it turned over with no hesitation. I will pull the other plug out tomorrow see if it does the same thing...

Timing key... nother name for the flywheel key yes?
Found a socket to fit the nut, big ole 1 1/4in bugger.. now I need to find a stinking impact driver.
Unless there is a fancy trick I can use to get it off?

Thanks.

The sparkplugs that it had are not the same, so I dont know what one is right. One just says 'lawn mower" on it.
I looked it up and found a place that listed 2 different plugs for it.
Im a bit confused.

Heres the model 42A707 if some one can point me in the right direction...

That's an L-head oppy twin, yes? If so, Champion #'s RJ19LM, J19LM, or RJ12.

I meant to keep the engine from turning. It didnt look like I could jam anything in there with damaging something...
I had read about sticking rope down the plug hole but I couldnt seem to get it in there enough.

Id rather not have to rip and tear too much off it. :ack2:

Rope is the way to do it. Use something thin to stuff the rope in there. Try get the piston BDC to give yourself more room
