So I've been wanting a snow blade for my lawn mower because for one, i think it would just be cool and two, i think i may be able to make some money with it. I have it mostly figured out and some of the pieces gathered, but I'm not sure what I will use to make it go up and down. Any ideas? It's on an older craftsman riding mower. I will be posting pics sometime later on in the week.

Look up "vague" in your dictionary...

I am left having to ASSume you're talking about a riding mower. Most riders need much more than a blade to cut grass. Usually 2 or more blades, in addition to an entire cutting deck assembly. This also includes a drive system for the blades, and a lift/lower mechanism. If you have none of those parts, start scouting. With luck, you can buy the whole shebang in one shot.

Yeah. Kind of important.

Anyways *cough*, I've seen guys with ATV's using little 12v winches to lift/lower plow blades. You can get these winches pretty cheap.

Would i be able to use one with a lawn mower? I was thinking about it, but i didn't figure the mower would have the power to use it.

We have 2 John Deere riding mowers with plow attachments at work. They usually take care of the sidewalks and delivery ramps. The big stuff is left to the trucks though.

I've driven them, they work great.

Snow blower attachments are more fun though. :)

Depends what your end-game for the mower is. If you want to keep it stock-ish, I suggest wheel weights and snow chains. If you don't mind modifying, I'd be putting a Lincoln Locker in the rear!

Hey- that's not a bad idea! I was contemplating tossing together a little plow blade for my ATV, and I do have a drum or two around here. Just need a good strip of flat bar for the scraper blade.

Depending on how down-&-dirty you want to build it, I wouldn't go any thinner than 1/4"X 1" for the cutting edge (standard drum; wack a slice off top to bottom, no other framework reinforcement).

I guess you can shoot for the moon if you want; or are you just looking for something that works. Also, a lot depends on how carefully you operate/use it; If you want to recreate that scene from first blood where Stalone drives over a cop car with a Deuce and a half, you're pretty much on your own for the design.:ack2::roflol:

I've got the actual plow part. I've got some angle to reenforce it. I'm not sure how to make the plow go up and down though, the winch is a good idea, but I'm not sure if it will work with the mower.

:useless: Most basic snow blades for lawn tractors utilise the lift linkage for the (dismounted) mower deck.

It will work if you make it work. Build a support structure and platform high enough to mount the winch, and you're off.

Oh, if you have the actual plow then its easy. just use the mowerdeck lift/lower linkage as machinist said.

Not the whole plow but the main part of it. I will be putting pics up possibly tomorrow. I'm at my moms the plow is at my dads, so it's kinda hard to get pics.
