Im all for maximum performance out of this engine but I think I will stick to stock steel reeds.

Turns out I have an extra set of carbon fiber reeds...hand made by humble self.
Just needs 1 hole drilled for mounting. Are you interested?

After looking at pics of your dual engine kart I finally clued in that your using the Tecumseh minibike specific air cleaners lol.

I'm thinking I will run a billet air filter adapter with a clamp on all foam air cleaner so I can get my Tav angled closer to the horizontal position. If the jackshaft bearing section hits the foam air filter and compresses it abit, I'm ok with that.

Hahah...yes Russ I bet they are and I feel the same about clone OHV engines
as yourself.

I'm a huge fan of 2 cycle engines myself too and I have always wanted a large bore, big displacement 2 smoker on my minibikes or karts, just like back in the day.

Not to jack your thread Rear Engine 86, carbon fiber reeds are way more responsive than steel reeds and steel reeds can be very destructive to an engine when they break and go through a engine, not good! I would take the offer from Russ. Don't be a clone!

I'm a lil nervous drilling the extra hole due to the carbon fraying.
Should I just put a dab of CA glue where I drilled the hole?

My biggest concern is the reed screws backing out and tossin a wrench in the works! Loctite 271 it is...

With the threads clean and or primed the 271 will not let you down.

Do you think a piece of granite tile from a hardware store will work for a flat true surface?

I use plate glass and I have had good results, make sure to move the object that you are lapping in a figure 8 pattern, a lapping block is the best thing to use but not everyone has access to one, I also use my lathe to reduce most of the material that I remove from cylinder heads to adjust the squish band and then finish lapping the surface smooth. I would say no to the tile. What ever Russ has done with his engine I would follow his advice, We are talking about different engines and procedures here. Maybe he has lapped the cylinder and head together?

I have put screw holes in reed petals before by finding a piece of small diameter steel tubing and sharpen the edge of the tubing and making a hole punch this way and I have punched out the mounting screw holes this way on my old Husqvarna race bikes.

Not to worry...
That area of reed is covered by small rectangular retainer plate. No need to do anything.
