1/8" thick steel is gonna be heavy but, as you said, with that shell, there's no need for any framework...

You have to leave the rear fin, maybe just remove the side panels, they'll play havoc with the handling

Wow, not much room for fuel inside a belly tank, is it?

As they were never designed for long distances, a smaller fuel "cell" is all that's required; unless I'm mistaken, that's the fuel cell over the trans (post #13, pic 1)

I think he's looking for something with just a little more grunt, Jim; a 12' long, 1/8" thick missile is gonna be kinda heavy, I don't think 60hp is gonna cut it... double it & you might be getting close...

Okay..

that's roughly 220kg of steel just like that,
a modern day 4cyl engine is around 85 kg,
a matching gearbox around 30 kg
let's say you'd need another 120 for axles, wheels, seat , springs and so on..
and we end up with a dryweight of ~450kg (a bit over 990 lbs)

let's say 1150lbs with driver and fuel.. that's not THAT much is it...?
with the 60 horses Jim suggested, it should be able to hit ~110mph (mathematically...)

but the smaller the engine the later "it torques", right?
So yeah.. with all those stupid GiXXer Karts out there,
there should be a GSX-R 1100 engine waiting for you

750 with 125hp, 1100 with 140hp or
a 1300 hayabusa 165hp...
and it screams at you like a siren... so yeah

So yeah, I think that thing would even move with a honda gx620 or alike..
but a bike engine as Jim suggested will help to keep the weight down, and can pack quite a punch

And.. I'm a bit torn right now.. I really like to see the baroness and bonneville going,
but that thing has me as well..

Don't forget that the United states signed the metre convention
in 1878.. it's about time that you leave those artificial imperial units behind

(and yes.. the metre convention includes kilogramms )

Mtere conversion? never heard of it. What really kills me is when the discovery channel says a car or plane or something is traveling x kilometers per hour and I ask my wife "is that fast?" or they tell you something is x kilometers away and again I wonder "is that far?"
Of course I am just Joking. But I did tell my daughter I could not help her with her math homework when it was all metric! I did tell her not to worry about it though because 30 years ago in school they told me it was the wave of the future and well... still waiting.

But my buddies professional mechanics Snap on tool set does have metric wrenches that are 8&1/2 mm. So if metrics are so great why do they need to switch to 1/2s?

Still joking around. I hope I am insulting my own intelligence more than any metric users

Well, joking aside.. your inch is PER DEFINITION nothing but 25.4mm and that means, without the metric system you cannot even measure in inches anymore (at least not precisely).. that's what I meant with "artificial"...

not sure about the transverse leafs up front though;

Yeah....it's been an excersize in stupidity actually.....the only benefit possibly being requiring American products to have American replacement parts....maybe......

But.....it should have been done a long long time ago.....but part of the problem (I think)....was resistance caused by all the apprehension over conversion......

But.....that's where it all goes wrong....and without reason...we have had one and two liter soda bottles here for a while.....nobody cares how many ounces they are anymore.....they now know how big a liter of soda is......well with speed limit signs and distance to the next town or whatever in kilometers and speedometer and odometers that read in kilometers....it wouldn't take long to figure out that either....funny.....dope dealers figured out kilograms pretty quickly......one thing that would have to be measured in fractional metric though....is a quarter mile....

But it would have been soooooo easy back in the 1800's......now conversion is a monumental undertaking....there's a lot more to change now......

400 meter.. (yes, that's 0.5% or 2m short of a quarter mile, but the roundest representation)
and that's the main benefit..

3 feet minus 10%... what a pain...
0.3feet are 3.6 inches.. that's 2 feet, 8 2/5 inches
takes at least three steps to calculate...
and I don't even want to try to cut another 10%...

now metric...
1meter minus 10% thats 0.9 meter or 90 cm
one step...
another 10% -> 81cm,
and another 10% cut.. 729mm (=72.9 cm = 0.729 meter)
in your head just like that...

And I disagree Doug.. it'd been harder in the 1800's;
since communication back then was much harder.
Today, information travels at nearly the speed of light;
in the 1800s it travelled at maybe the speed of a horse

Well...hate to keep hijacking Kelly's thread.....but...first off....I'm a carpenter....my life would be so much easier if my measurements were metric ....no more trying to add 1/2+ 3/8+1/4.....much easier to move decimal points than convert fractions.....so...in case you misunderstood me....we were in total agreement that the imperial system sucks.....

However....I will have to strongly disagree on when it should have been done and why....I couldn't tell you exactly when it stopped....but in the early days...pretty much each state coined it's own money and there were no standard weights or denominations....train schedules ran on their own clocks which didn't necessarily jibe with the destinations and those particular towns idea of what time it was....so while it may have taken some time for the word to spread....the country was much smaller with a smaller population and way fewer things to alter.....

Today....we would have to repaint, move or replace millions of speed limit and mileage signs.....and it would make no sense whatsoever to leave them where they were and show fractional distances....but move or place new ones at full kilometers from the destination...and....with so many American automobiles with imperial speedometers....speed limit signs would have to show both......

Then all the gas pumps that measure gallons.....all the vehicles that have Imperial capacities.....So many billions of products that are packaged in pounds and ounces......

So many products built to yards, feet, and inches.....the crossover time would have been short....and a very few amount of things would have survived to today anyway.....

Today it's nearly impossible to only have one system exclusively in America.....but if we had made the switch in the 1800's,....we would be very nearly completely metric...with the Imperial measurements becoming obsolete with very little effort....and only antique imperial items.....
