Yeh i have a couple of L head tecumseh engines(is that what they're called??)

one is an h25 and one an h35. My plan is to build some sort of motorised bicycle. Both engines came attached to Morrison reel mowers.

my plan is to build something with the h25 and then after that build something better with the h35. The h35 runs but the carb needs rebuilding, The h25 has spark and compression so should run but i am guna clean it up before i try to get it going.

pics:

h25:

have dissasembled engine now and am in the process of cleaning everything, Spent an hour on the head today. Bloody dirty.

H35:

still attached to mower. Having problems removing the clutch. Grub screw is rusted in super good...

some victa stuff in working on to help pay for tecumseh bike build:

yeh. Keeping my eyes open for a nice bike to put the h25 on. For now i'll keep working on engine.

try a cereal box , remove the outside smooth part, and coat it with gasket maker.

ive used only a cereal box before with success... no leaks yet.

Yeah i doubt 6 or 8mm!

I just tore down a 5.3 tecumseh mower engine that smells burning when it runs... Friday i think. Mine was alot worse!!! Chunks of carbon buildup were falling out!

have been at it with wire brush and degreaser and wire wheel on my drill. Got rid of most paint/rust. Also found a shop at the other end of country(invercargill) which has parts

ok

whats something that will remove 30 years of crap easily?

im running out of elbow grease

oven cleaner?

-have purchased paint and got hold of some new crank seals. Keen to reassemble but having mega trouble geting the thing clean enough to paint

edit: oh yeh and i got a new flywheel retaining nut off a vertical shaft tecumseh but its the wrong size. Will go back to shop tmrw and find another one. I think the engines been apart before. When i undid the flywheel nut it was only finger tight. Closer inspection revealed that it was cross threaded and the thread on the crank was mushroomed(is that a word?). i filed down the end of the shaft so thats ok but i need a new nut.

couldnt find marine clean anywhere

went to the biggist hardware store i could find. Everything which looked like it would work said "do not use on alloy" in the fine print.

somebody told me to use coke. So i bought a few bottles. Its works ok. Might take it to my mates house and try to water blast the last of the crap off. Or maybe soak it in petrol over night or something.. there are a few places i just cant get to with anything other than a tooth pick. Degreaser would work if i could get a brush in there to scrub it

yeh i've used piant stripper and that did a good job of cleaning most of it. Problem areas are in the cooling fins and under/behind the ports. Theres alot of baked on oil/carbon/dirt that just will not come off! haha

will put some more paint stripper on and leave it for a while

yeh thats the type i have.

just tried it again. Put heaps on and its cleaned it up well. I think i'll have to do a couple more applications and then it'll be done. Cheers

edit: just bought a tecumseh 4.5hp vertical shaft engine for 30 bucks to put on the new mower body i bought yesterday. Thought i would put one of my briggs engines on it but after pulling them down to inspect they're both alot more stuffed than i thought.

next problem to solve is the governor arm. It seems to be bent and is realy tight in the housing. Wont flop around like it should...pulled one out of a 3.5hp vert shaft engine at the mower shop yesterday but its different length. I think it must of siezed in there last time it was run as the clip that attachs to the arm on outside of engine is rooted. Got one of those off the vert shaft engine tho...just need to straighten out my arm

bent the govenor arm back into shape and it now seems to be in working order. Still on the hunt for a flywheel nut.

Gotta love them old Tecumseh flatheads... you got-er cleaned up and looking good man!

I'd just stay with the bare metal-look and maybe sand/polish some of the easier to reach areas up a little so they're smoother.
