Kx500 2 stroke shifter kart

Having wanted a shifter kart as long as I can remember, I finally decided to go ahead and build one. Picked up an old racing chassis off Craigslist, and also a Kx500 2 stroke dirt bike to use the engine out of woulda been happy with a 125 or 250 but got a screaming deal on a 500 so decided it could be fun having 60hp in a 200lb kart. Chopped a part of the frame off the 500 with the motor mounts and welded it right on to the side of the kart. Then threw a support bar in there, and decided that thing isn't going anywhere! Next was the radiator, a welded a mount on to the opposite side and bolted it on. Last thing I did, and undoubtedly the most time consuming was boring out a crankshaft sprocket to fit the 1 1/4" axle. But 3 hours on the lather later and it slid on. Just gotta drill some holes through it to mount it to the hub.
That was one weekends worth of work, hopefully this Friday we'll link the shifter up and have a quick kart ready to go!

MAN HOLD UP! Thats gonna SCREAMMMMMMMM I would DEFINITELY add some kinda wheelie bar to keep from flippin..... lol besides, a 2 block long wheelie on a kart would be AWESOME...... LOL

Ha that's the idea! Nobody could ever use all 60 horses when on the bike, but 1" above the ground, with double the traction, and little chance of looping out, we'll be able to use more of what it can dish out!

I hope you have some super duper brakes on that thing; with a power:weight ratio just slightly lower than that of a Bugatti Veyron SS, you're gonne need all the stopping power you can get...

i would look into some spoilers and what not for down force. unless you plan on getting a pilots license

little fun fact, at just over 100 mph a indy car has enough down force to drive upside down...

Well I've got my student pilot license so that's a start but I've been building and flying model airplanes for years so have quite a bit of experience with lift-aerodynamics, just gotta flip it for downforce. Gonna have a front wing and splitter, as well as a spoiler to keep the rear glued. Also going to eventually incorporate some air brakes which when popped up, will give massive down force to also help braking traction. Plan is to take it to Wednesday night drag races and watch all the civic owners' jaws hit the floor
Also, now realizing the kx500 has about 70hp or so, 10 more then I thought... And kart weighs about 200 lbs wet, and I weigh about 130.... Soooo we're looking at 70hp pushing 350lbs.... Aka 400hp/ton.... Compared to a veyron's 475 per ton... Hold on tight

I don't think u will be beating any civics for speed

Unfortunately all these karts start out like this
But u quickly realise all u do is a continuos burnout though all gears

If u really want to drag this thing then put it on a proper frame and u will get far better results

Also if u think about it
U have infact lost alot of traction compared to the bike
U have lost a lot of weight
And have tiny tyres
The bike is also well balenced
U are also super low geared with those tiny tyres

Except for the gearing I machined a custom 16t sprocket out of a spare front sprocket, keeping the gear ratio to tire size almost identical, and in fact slightly higher top speed with less torque. And as for the power, it's all about being smooth and not just stomping on it. As far as traction goes, there is now a total of about 16" of rear slick tire width, compared to a dirtbikes 5" of knobby rear.
