I was at my neighbors house the other day and he had shown me one of his knifes that he made a while back. A few weeks later he found out he was getting a forge and all the blacksmithing tools, last night when he got home i went over and was looking at the stuff he had gotten. I started to look up some blacksmith stuff on youtube and i got interested in the idea of making my own knife. I have a piece of saw blade cut out and i am going to give it a shot.

Anyone make knives or do the whole blacksmith thing? And people that make knives, have any advice?

Gettin there... stil dont know for sure if this is good metal, gona take the flame and oil to it and see what happens...

Id like to make a nice folding pocketknife someday... I think that would be cool.
I think reciprocating saw blades may work...

I think they might be a bit small

This is what i've done in a half an hour. Before it had 3 or 4 teeth on each side. I used the air grinder to cut them off an angle grinder to smooth out the edges.

to soften the metal to make it easier to grind......look up "annealing"

it helps to know what metal you are using but it can generally be done in your home oven in a couple hours. after all done grinding , then you can re-harden it ( hopefully at your neighbors house !)
also .....take your time! knifemaking is time consuming....and rushing to get through it will prob result in a lesser quality knife than you'd hoped for. if you're gonna take the time to make a knife, then you might as well take a little more time and make it right!
just my .02
i have made a few knives, but i am by no means a knifemaker !
