Kids these days...

Saturday I’m weedeating at my business when I turn around and there’s a car in the [deep] ditch. It’s a customer, lady, who missed the driveway and decides to turn anyway. The back left wheel is now about 4 feet off the ground! She didn’t know it was that deep.

I go over to assess the damage…not too bad, nothing bent and then I see something that totally DISMAYED me! In the passenger seat is her teenage son with his earbuds in playing on his phone. Didn’t bother to get out and help his mom or even look up for that matter. I’m not sure he even knew they were in a ditch. (Unless he was facebooking "OMFG! My mom just drove in a ditch LMFAO!")

So, I get a chain from my friend at the body shop next door, direct traffic and use my truck to pull her out. The body shop owner helped and looked everything over for her. Meanwhile the other neighbor sees this and brings out some bottled water as a gesture.

Not only does the kid not even lift a finger, he just looks at the gifted water like, “what am I supposed to do with this?”

I know I’m getting old but dang, when I was his age I would have been the first one out assessing the damage and hustling a chain and a truck to get it out.

I know many of the pre/teens on this board would never act like this kid and for that, and any hope for the future of humanity I'd like to say a big ol' THANK YOU!

Around where I live (DE), and around where I've lived temporarily in PA, a lot of kids in their teenage years wreck enough cars that the kid was probably thinking 'been here, done this'

But seriously, kids will intentionally drive their cars into stuff so mommy and daddy/the insurance company will buy them a new one. I knew of at least one person who, before graduating high school, had totaled 3 (yes, three) 2005 and newer vehicles and were saying their insurance was something around $1000 a month. I'm sure other members in other places have heard/seen similar things.

And don't get me started on the fart cans/cold air intakes on the cars where the owner probably wouldn't even know how to change the oil, much less tune the engine to need those things.

Later that day: "MOM, MY IPHONE BROKE WHEN YOU CRASHED THE CAR, BUY ME A NEW ONE"

That happens more times than I care to think about where I live in Southern California. People come to school in one beamer, Then I here them talking another day, "I crashed my BMW, but Im going to the dealership today after school to get a new car." YEESH, give me a break.

To finish the sentence: Kids these days wouldn't know up from down (well, most of them). Even if this kid was inclined (which, again, most aren't) he probably wouldn't have a clue what to look at much less what to do about it.

Unfortunately, my step son is one of them. He's either at school or in front of his computer. Absolutely no manual dexterity & if common sense was dynamite he wouldn't have enough to blow his nose. Granted, he's not quite as bad as the kid in this story; he would at least get out & have a look... not that he'd have the faintest idea what to do about it...

I started driving with an 89 Jeep Wrangler, which I had to make numerous repairs too over the course of its life. Including riding County Transit to the auto parts store to pick up an alternator once.

Its quite sad when you meet kids that drive a truck, and have no idea how to change a tire. Most automakers are giving up on them in exchange for run-flats or a can of tire sealant.

The same being said about working on cars fits into computers too... "Mom, my $1000 2 year old laptop can't play this horribly optimized facebook game because of all the viruses I get from porn and free screensavers, buy me a new one"

Or the people whose fancy almost new core i7 dell computer with no real graphics card can't play a game... so they buy a new one.

funny enough my sister is one of those people that has horrible luck with computers. every time she get on a computer it almost needs to be formatted and everything re installed.

that must have been a pretty funny site to see someone sitting on a bus with auto parts. before i got 2 vehicles i would call my dad or bike down to pick up parts.

how did this kid not even feel it? youd think he would notice getting tossed all over the place. but oh well. i have an 85 jeep ive been working on for awhile. blown head gasket and in the midst of replacing it a seized engine.

i have a 5 year old computer and can still play alot of the newer games. im only 18 and can say for one we need to teach kids how to take car of them selves and not spoil them by doing all the work

I think it is safe to say that every 'kid' on this forum is unlike the one in that story.
Myself, being 16, know first hand what you are on about. The amount of kids at school with £500 iPhones and £15000 first cars sickens me!
My parents attitude is probably correct, most of the time if I want something, I have to pay for it and save for it.

Although I'm only 13 I know what your talking about. Me unlike every other teenager I ride go karts. I have a iPod and a old Samsung cell phone. I grew up driving tractors so I'm pretty much a redneck. God kids theses days are stupid

That story went on and on about how the current generation of kids didnt respect traditions, their parents values, laws and were just a completely worthless generation that would totally screw the whole world up.

Now a days you hear people saying stuff like that all the time, including this thread.

But the thing that really stuck me about this particular story I'd read, Is that it was dated back like in the year 1600 or so...

That date kinda puts things in perspective and makes ya think, huh?

yes, there's an anger (and apathy to how it affects other people) associated with today's generation gap that didn't used to be there.

in defense of today's youth, tho, things have been getting worse for a while and nowadays they just don't know anything different.
