Hello I am getting ready to put my sprocket/hub wheel/tire assembly onto a 1 inch axle with 1/4x1/4 inch key. At this time I don't have any lock collars. Can I run the key in each assembly or should I run the key the whole length of the axle. Each wheel and sprocket hub have their own set screws. I realize I will need lock tight on set screws. Can I get buy without lock collars. This setup is on a self made 3/4 inch square tubing mini bike (nothing fancy) frame. With a predator 212 motor -governor removed air intake / muffler upgrades. thanks mike

You don't need key stock where there is no hub/wheel/etc. Lock collars prevent side-to-side or lateral movement of the components. If you take it easy it would probably be ok, but who takes it easy? I suggest you go ahead and invest in the (2 piece) lock collars for future peace of mind.

You could also use pipe clamps on both sides with a longer key, to clamp the key of the hub to prevent movement.

I just almost lost a wheel because I think I forget the key in its hub.
The Wheel hub moved over 2 inches and probably would have come off.

I will be investing in lock collars for my axle.

I had thrown a key for my main tire hub..... Partly welded the shaft to the hub... and thats how I stopped that day before I found the key on the floor....

The way I think: the purpose of the key is to enable the axle to transfer it's angular momentum to the wheel/hub/etc., it also happens to play a role in securing the assembly to the axle. However, if the only hardware devise in use to prevent horizontal motion on the axle is a small set screw, this is a weak point that locking collars can overcome.

Get the Lock collars. They are cheap. but get the higher priced Split type collars. Well worth the investment to avoid the hassle.

Wait, this is for a mini bike? So, there's a flange or pillow block bearing on each end, correct? If so, the axle won't be too long & is locked at each end so, spacers should do the trick...
