Ken-Bar Streaker D-612e, need help identifying parts

Hello,

I am helping a friend of mine with his go-kart. We are trying to determine if it is worth it putting it back together. The engine turns and runs great. I don't know much about karts but I work on cars for a living. He doesn't know much about it either. That's when I stumbled upon this site.

I was hoping that someone might be able to help me identify parts, determine what parts are missing, what's needed etc...It appears that someone has tinkered with the kart before.

I have put the questions after the pictures. Thanks for the help. Any info is greatly appreciated.

This site is a great resource and I've spent time looking around, but I figure now and then it is better to ask.

What kind of transmission is that? It looks like it has 3 speeds plus a reverse; previous owner tried to rig up something. I am not sure what kind of linkage is needed to shift it properly.

Whats the best way to determine the belt size for the drive train, also what's the proper way to install it?

Is there a tensioner needed to hold the belt properly?

I have included a pic showing the driver side rear axle, there appears to be a bracket and linkage for the brake, what kind of brake setup will this kart accept? Disc or drum?

Nice kart. First off I have got to say that I have no idea what transmission that is, but someone will let you know soon.

What I do know is that you have an ols GX120 Honda, which is a really good engine. As far as I know they are not manufactured any more. I see that your recoild rope is hanging out of the recoil. That could mean that there is a problem with the spring inside, like it is unwound, or maybe something is up with the starter clutch. The starter clutch could just need some lubrication.

I unfortunately cannot tell you much about the brake setup, but it was probably for a mechanical brake caliper.

4HP would probably not really be powerful enough to push 2 people around, so you might want to swa the engine out. You could gear it really low though as well, but you won't have much speed.

Thanks for the input. The first thing I did was to go to their site. Unfortunately, there isn't any information on the actual model that I have. I tried emailing and no luck. My friend called -the guy he spoke to said that they can order parts from them - and I believe he said that they just moved to South Carolina from Georgia. Problem is, what parts to order? But I am starting to believe that someone actually put the kart together from multiple sources. (The small underpowered engine is not exactly up to the task of propelling two people - this might be a good thing since the kart will be used by kids mainly)

My plan is to measure the length need for the V-belt to power the kart. Maybe get a V-belt from an Auto Parts store and figure out a way to install it without a tensioner.

Then, I need to figure out how the gearing linkage is actually operated. It appears that the kart has three speeds and a reverse, there are two levers, not really sure about their function. I know one shifts gears, but the other is a mystery. The previous owner did bolt up some angle iron levers. Maybe he was shifting it manually? Or maybe just left it in first gear. Who knows. It doesn't appear that there is a manual shift lever in the cock pit.


Thanks for your input, once again. This weekend I will try and work on it some more, fix the starter rope, clean it up some and change the oil. This is a drink a few beers and have something to talk over project. I am really looking forward to it.

This is just an update in case anyone was wondering.
I made some progress with the research on the kart.

I am pretty sure that is a Peerless 855/860 series transaxle. From what I read it looks to be a very good transaxle. I came across www.heymow.com and saw a couple of people mention it and they had positive things to say about them. I also found out that the transaxle works really well with a Comet 20,30 and 40 series Torque Converter. So that will be my next goal to acquire one of those.
I will post more questions in the appropriate forums.
