Personally, I wouldn't go any larger than what you have already. Aside from the fact that it might hit the frame, your gearing will be affected, and you will have to change a whole lot more than just the tyres.

Post some pics of your kart and the drivetrain. We will then be able to help you further

:iagree: but, to answer your question:
Measure from your axle centre to the surrounding frame bars. Once you have that measurement, subtract 1" for clearance, then double the remaining number. That number is the absolute maximum tyre size you can use without doing any serious damage.

Everyone uses different tyres depending on the application. What type of surface will you be riding on?

Knobbies are good for dirt but can be a bit noisy on paved surfaces & tend to chew up turf/grass.
Turf are good for... well, turf/grass & paved
V tread are usually for use on loose dirt or for climbing
