Hey guys and gals. I'm new on this site. I plan on building a go-kart for my niece and nephew. I got free plans from a different site for a small go-kart.

I'm currently coming up with designs, on paper, to build an off-road go-kart from scratch. I have absolutely no knowledge of go-karts, but I've been working on cars for 13years now. I currently build cars for a living, so I have knowledge of how the systems on a motorized vehicle operate. I have a very small knowledge base of how to weld. I will learn, though.

Welcome Keith.

I got free plans from a different site for a small go-kart.

Which one, we may be familiar with it

Can we see or is it a secret? :)

There are obvious similarities but, having 25 years in the auto industry myself, I can tell you, there are some aspects that no amount of experience with cars can prepare you for...

I have a very small knowledge base of how to weld. I will learn, though.

Good, you're gonna need it

Welcome to DIYGK, Keith!

:funnypost: :roflol: You know Chris, you're in the extreme southern end of Canada; I'm betting that you're only an hour, hour and a half north of me by latitude. That means that there is a whole line of US States that are actually north of you.....

Correct on all counts. If'n you feel like playing on google maps or something, I'm a 30 minute drive north of Toronto, just outside Bradford. But we all like to play with stereotypes, don't we? :D

How close are you to the 45th Parallel? I'm ~ an hour and a quarter/ hour and a half south of it. I know you're closer, I'm just curious if you are actually on the N side of the line...

Thank you for all the welcome messages :)

@ Fabroman - It's the Itzy Bitzy Spider kart free plans. How can I upload the progress I've made, on paper, so far? Is there a computer drawing program that I can use to upload to this site? It's not a secret. I hope that maybe we can come together and make good progress on it, or, at least see if it will be safe and/or feasible. I hear that on other sites that are about go-kart building; that no amount of automotive knowledge will make it a smooth go-kart build. It may or may not account for much...thank God that there are sites like this, hehe. When this project goes from pencil to paper to practicality, I plan on buying a brand new TIG or MIG welder (which I can also use on my car projects) to learn with. I also plan to have the welds inspected by a certified welder. Safety really is my #1 priority. That will show as time goes on with this project.

I don't have a computer with an internet connection. I do all of my posting with an Android. So when I want to show something on paper- that's exactly what I do. I draw it on paper- shoot a pic of it with my phone and post the pic......:idea2:

This is the plan that I came up with so far. It's not 100% neat and tidy, but I was using a wooden ruler because I didn't have a plastic one (which I prefer). I'll tidy it up eventually, but for now the idea and shape is good enough for me. If you have any questions on what is what, I'll be glad to answer them.

Thank you, Fabroman, for the help!

I've tried Oxy/Acetylene welding in shop class, but that's the only time I did it. Maybe 2-3 times. I would like to learn on a TIG because I want a very proper build, and have good weld bead appearance. My dad knows how to weld very well. I was talking to him last night, and he said he'd love to use a TIG welder but they cost too much to buy, so he doesn't have one at home, he only has one at his work. So I'm sure he'd be able and more than willing to show me the practical part of it. I'm still going to research TIG welding, though. Do you think that is wise? I'm willing to spend a fair amount of money ($1,500 - $2,000) for one. I made a new thread for the build so that I won't congest the welcome page, and it's located here: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=24781
