Keep band or upgrade to disc brakes?

I have a carter trail runner I'm building and it has 2 4 3/4 band brakes in the rear but they are trashed. So as it sits I'm looking at buying 2 drums and 2 bands and for that price I was thinking about switching to a disc brake set up. Any suggestions?

If I did go with a disc would a single disc have enough stopping power or should I put 2 back on there? It's a 2 seater kart with a 11 hp briggs.

From what I found those 4 3/4 bands are about $25 each and I still haven't found the drums. I figured at least $100 to replace the band brake set up and for that I could go disc.

I'm on board with that, too. One disk brake. I don't know how good mechanical calipers tend to be, though. Go hydraulic! It doesn't have to cost a lot, and there's nothing better...

No doubt. But I didn't mean durability or reliability. I meant raw clamping force as applied to a heavy kart/rider combo.

get a dirt bike front brake caliper and master. fronts are bigger. you can find them on ebay cheap together. you'll have to do some fab work but you'll save cash.
