Not sure what this is. I rescued it from being hauled to the junkyard yesterday. My dad tells me it's a bug. But I did research and it looks nothing like a bug kart. I'm completely baffled as to what I have. I paid less than 40 dollars for it, so whether it's something special or not I'm still going to put it on the track and have fun shaving laptimes with it. Any info on what it is and what parts are available for brakes and final drive would be much appreciated!

extremeley nice score!!

that's a Margay kart!
The short snout sugeests a Bandito... but I can't tell for sure:
check for the serial number (crossbracing in front of the "seat" [if you had one]; or the inside of the spindle bracket)

If you don't find a serial anywhere, take a set of good pics
and send two or three to info@margay[dot]com
and kindly ask for assistance;
they will be able to tell you for sure what model that is once they ask for more pics or details.

the wheels alone are worth a fortune

Thanks man I found out its a margay expert. 1979. I have no idea how I'll come across a compatible engine, seat, and brakes yet. But I intend to.

Any idea what kind of motor I can get away with using on this?

I think just about any 6.5hp (196cc) or close Honda or honda clone engine.

You see the engine mount in front of the sprocket? Not sure if the slits in it is the right spacing for a clone but if not see if it comes off and replace the mount. There's a few to chose from. I'm only linking this one because you can tell by looking at it how it will go on

But if it fits I'd use the original

Hey sid. I've noticed you're really good at identifying old karts. Would you mind checking out the $70 score thread I made long ago? See if you have any idea?

Well the ideal engine is the Margay LMR 100, which is nearly impossible to get I'd say..
Adequate is indeed -like Chancer suggested- the KT100 (Yamaha) which will be easy to find..
But any 100cc aircooled kart engine will do for a perfect match.

If you want a four stroke, do not buy a predator or clone.. that's blasphemic...
a Flathead (say a B&S raptor) is what's at least slightly period correct (no OHV engines)

The Bandito at least had an optional set of Nerfbars to fit a four stroke, IDK if that's the case for the XPert as well..
so yeah... maybe it doesn't fit at all.

@Ryafor, seen that thread.. sorry.. I don't know.

PS No1 Rule if you ever want to sell it: DO NOT WELD ANYTHING TO THE KART! especially no motor mounts.

I'm pretty sure my uncle has an extra kt100 in his garage. I'm pretty excited about seeing if it fits. I'll be working on mounting the seat and getting the brakes on. Then I will update! Thanks guys you have been a great help.

Turns out. The motor mounts are not only replaceable. But are fairly easy to modify to fit my kart without doing any harm to the frame. Now I guess the real question is how fast I feel safe going on a vintage kart.

That depends on the size of your cajones.
Properly restored, you have a race kart capable of going as fast as you have the ability to control.

Well well well. As far as design. This kart is extremely close to the expert 2. But margay corrected the mistake by enlightening me that this is a pro x kart. Either way this will be a fun project to complete and get rolling. And to jandj...you are exactly right. Although I have never been known to have "the fear" in me. So I'll do some laps and figure what setup works best for getting the top speed and fastest laps possible.
