Kart I.D., drive wheel assembly, brakes, and other musings

Hey Folks,

I purchased this go-kart on Offer-Up. No additional photos are available yet, but I'm hoping someone can help me identify it? I'm thinking it is a Yard Star, but that is only a guess based on others I've found on google. It has a Predator engine--not sure on the size--but the centrifugal clutch I'm replacing is a 3/4" bore 12T #35 clutch/chain combo. I'll get more pictures if needed.

The engine starts great but--as I mentioned above--needs a new clutch and chain. The Kart also needs a brake system. This is where I'm getting a little stuck. I assume it was a band brake, but other than a post near the drive wheel there isn't much to go on. I attached some photos of the wheel.

Am I safe to assume that someone has assembled this wheel incorrectly? I'm guessing the brake drum should be on the inside of the wheel sprocket. The brake band will attach to the post you can see in photo one.

The four posts attaching the wheel to the sprocket look questionable at best (photo two). Those have clearly been distorted with shear force and I'm guessing are not original equipment. I'm hoping someone has an example of how this should be assembled.

Thoughts and advice are appreciated.

Mac

Boy, I sure can’t answer you specific questions. But I can tell you it is a MANCO kart. With some research on your part with that information you may find what you need. Go Powersports carries a lot of MANCO stuff but be prepared to pay.

Thanks! That got me there. It appears to be a Manco 415 or 416. I found an assembly/parts diagram that shows plainly that the spacers between the drive wheel and sprocket should not be there. I wonder why they did this? It appears they may have been trying to extend the wheelbase, because they also added some oddball spacers on the other side. The diagram also shows the location for brake and band. I'll purchase aftermarket parts somewhere.

Nope, I believe your setup is mostly original. MANCO was good for using nuts for spacers like that. GoKart Supply, MFG Supply, BMI or Go Power Sports should have what you need to repair that kart and get it on the road.

It doesn't show those on the assembly diagram, but I'll take your word for it. Doesn't seem like a good design, yet I'm far from an expert. I've got a lot to learn in the world of Go-karts.

Thanks again for the nudge in the right direction.

I realize I’m a few years late but I recently bought the same go kart you have/had. It was the frame only, no drive wheel parts at all. I am only finding the same diagram you mentioned but it does not include the spacer and bolt dimensions for the wheel to the sprocket. Would you happen to know those based off the kart you have?

Fashionably late. 🧓

Funny you should say, we’re trying to get another guy‘s kart going with a Manco wheel spacer or make a new one for him. It’s a perpetual problem with unobtanium parts.

There are aftermarket sprocket and wheel combos but you just have to know what tooth count and rim size you want. It’s basically a minibike wheel-sprocket for a one-wheel-drive kart.
