Hello everyone. I just bought a go-kart frame. Kinda looks like a Yerfdog.2 seater. The motor is a Subaru Ex21. The axle has a 60t sprocket but the drive shaft on the motor doesn't have one. Which sprocket should I put on it and what else do I need to secure it to the shaft? Any other upgrades I should do to get better performance out of the motor? Thanks in advance for the help!!

remove the governor on the engine will get you much higher performance. as for the engine shaft you need to get a centrifugal clutch or a torque converter. A torque converter will give you a lot more torque and speed, however they run for around $200. A centrifugal clutch is what is very common on small karts and they go for around $30. The sprocket on the axle is fine however before you buy your clutch or tc you need to know what chain size your sprocket is. There are many upgrades that you can get for your engine to make it perform better but im not going to list them all. There are threads and websites going into more detail but there some basic ideas. Good luck!

#35 pitch and #40 pitch are really popular chain sizes, but get the chain that fits on your sprocket. Measure from tooth to tooth to find out. Also where will you be riding? off road or on? Do you want speed or torque?

Before futzing with the engine, go get a 10T clutch that matches your rear sprocket's chain pitch. Get it all together and drive it.

THEN decide what your needs are.

Well, by the sounds of what you just said, I thing you need a clutch. You usually just don't put a sprocket on the drive shaft on an engine when woriking with a gokart. To determine the clutch you need you have to use a caliper to measure the drive shaft on your motor (my guess is 3/4'' or maybe 5/8'' I AM NOT SURE). All I am gonna say is that you need a clutch. I don't wanna give you wrongful advice about modding you engine, but I have built karts/mini bikes before and know how a clutch goes on.

Awesome advice guys. I wasn't sure if I needed a sprocket or clutch but now I know. I'll be driving on mostly gravel and grass so more off roading than anything. Is there anything special I need to do after I remove the governor or just take it off and go? Thanks guys, awesome forum.
