well if theres fuses and relays then yeah you probably need a battery. Is it electric start?

It would be great if you could post some pictures of what you have so that we could take a look and see what can be done. If you could find the engine model number that could help out as well.

you WILL probably need a battery, the wiring is pretty simple unless your like me and want a winch, alternator, etc.

when you fiddled with it, there is a wire that "shorts" the coil, if you hooked this to a power source, it would not start, and get no spark, and maybe ruin the coil. luckily at least state side they are cheap. any idea what year the engine is? that will help get us to what your dealing with (electric fuel cut offs, etc) the coil ground wire is the only part that is very different from a car. most don't need a battery to run, so if you use a jumpercable to start it, it should continue to run. but if you stall it in a field, you will be in trouble. so I'd get a battery before you start playing too hard.

My engine is a riding mower engine as well, look forward to seeing your progress.

I found the manual for your engine model that shows all the parts but there's three versions of your engine; Pull start, Electric and Pull/Electric. Which one do you have? If yours is just a pull start then you shouldn't need much to get it going.

am not sure what year it is atall man. the engine used to have an electric starter but it was removed before i got it due to how cheep it was but i spoke to a mechanic about it an he said that i could remove all the wireing because the magnieto would still give power to the spark plug if i can get the engine spinning fast enough so i was goin to mount the engine to the trans axle and bump start the engine just to make sure it runs. if it runs im goin to try taking the starter out of my busted scooter and mounting it to the top of the engine.think it would b powerfull enough to turn my heavy engine? the scooter only has a 50cc engine a'll try to get some pics soon to let all u guys see what its looking like. i was wondering if anyone knows what the gap between the flywheel and the maneto should b on this engine or could tell me ware i would find out would b much appreciated
cheers:D

I read somewhere that the gap between the magneto and the flywheel should be enough where a thin butter knife can fit into.

well, from what i remember from my book, it needs to be .012 to .016 of an inch. You need a feeler guage to get it right. i'm unsure, so i'd do some more research.

Not sure what you mean by looking at it from the spark plug, but if you're looking straight at the shaft then it's gonna spin counter-clockwise.
