Hey I'm Bob

I'm a bartender with a Bachelor's degree in Physics, which is soft of like an Associates degree.... Meaning I have an expensive piece of paper that should be used to get more advanced pieces of paper.

I partied harder than I studied in college and General Undergrad Physics just scrapes the surface of most concepts anyway. So I have a basic idea of how some stuff works, but no real deep understanding of how most physics concepts make their way into engineering/design.

My undergrad research was an attempt to make a nuclear battery (technically it was a Radio - Isotopic - Micro - Power - Source RIMS. Funny cause I don't know much about batteries, right?? It was a DARPA grant (funded by US DoD) award to a local chemistry Lab. The guy who ran the lab got $3,000,000 (and bought a new Corvette) and my Physics dept. got 10% of that. We never got past phase 1 of the project.

Out of school, I took a job as a "Application Engineer" for Oxford Instruments. I was basically Tech Support for the Sales Team. I specialized in Non-Destructive Handheld X-Ray Florescence Spectrometers used in Quality Control and Research and Development Labs.

It was my job to determine if our testing equipment could be used for a customer's specific needs. Lets say an automotive manufacturer wants to use a new Zirconium primer. They would send us samples of steel with varying thickness of the coating (along with NON-Discloser Agreements). I would configure and calibrate a spectrometer, then test the samples for accuracy and precision, create a report describing the configuration, calibration, and testing process. I would then accompany the salesmen to demo the unit. If they decided to buy it, I would return to install it and train the operators.

I basically did all the work after the sales team got a lead.

We had lots of Big customers. 3M, Boeing, Valspar,... It goes on and on

Some of the products you use everyday may have been QC'd by equipment calibrated by ME!!!! Scary Right????

I actually turned down a job at the Particle Accelerator at Fermi Lab after accepting the job at Oxford Instrument. (They don't pay much to start and it was the most boring work and messed up hours)

For the past 8 years I have been bartending. I like it better than being a "proper salesman' but miss the science.

Recently my love of learning has been reignited and over the past year and a half I used Google, Youtube and froums such as this to teach myself what ever I was interested in. Last year I leaned about fishtanks, worms, plants, aquaponics, microgreens... My bearded dragon has a mini Aquaponics setup in his Terrarium growing fresh microgreens.

And now go karts.

My dream is to retire living off gird utilizing solar, wind, hdro-electric with access to a stream. I'd love to grow my own food and drink milk straight from the utter, but my Big Bro doesn't want people living independently.

Hopefully I will have a functioning Gasifier by the time I retire so I can run my gokart off of wood chips.

Its like at work.... I don't try to learn people's names til they have been there at least a month. If they survive long enough to still be there when we hire another, then they are allowed a name... instead of "Newbie."

Abby just got her name last week, she claims her parents call her something else

I agree wholeheartedly! I have even told a few guys that. Ususally they just get the point.
Makes it fun after they have been there for a while and they tell their side of the story looking back.
Usually something like "man I used to think you were a dick, Its kinda funny to think now that I know you"

Anyway Bob :welcome2:

Well since the local crazy hospital is closed and now occupied by the Military (they claim they are restoring some National Guard Armory Building), they're are lots of us walking the streets.

I had to call the cops on this guy to get him to leave my bar.

Ever just stay in bed trying to answer questions on here because you have no clean underwear and are too lazy to start a load of laundry; however you have a strange feeling that underwear may be an important part of your day, so you choose not to do anything for fear of being in a situation that would require underwear???
