This looks like a problem to me. The space between the sprocket and were the brake will be seems too wide. I'm afraid the brake will rip off. I didn't move anything so I guess this is how it look originally.

If you bought the brake drum then mounted it correctly, then you wouldn't have a problem. Yes, that is kinda wide of a gap but no, it wont "rip" off if you used 8-star bolts and tighten them down to there full potential. The only thing that might happen is that the band might slip off the drum, but probably not because you have the lips on each side. Thats still a quick fix, add a disc of metal on each side of the drum maybe an inch wider than the drum so if the band moves left to right, it wont slide off.

I see a few problems. Is that a dead axle (1 wheel drive)? It looks like it. If so, the brake drum will mount to the hub used for the sprocket. You can use it but you'll have to re-configure your brake rod. Also, the sprocket looks to be too far away from the engine mount. Set your engine & clutch on there and see if the 2 sprockets line up.

It's odd. All this stuff is original to the go-kart. They had put larger tires on it and had rigged it up with about 50 washers and large nuts. (big ol mess) I have the original spacer for the sprocket but I don't know if there was a special spacer from the brake or something. I'm pretty sure the mounting position for the brake band is original.
This is a Manco Stinger BTW. Anyone got one?

Yes, it's a dead Axle.

I have an important question. Does a rod go through the reaar axle for both wheels tp ride on or is it just a shaft coming out on either end? If it is an axle then you can take the rod out and trim down the sides of the axle housing to where you need it. I did this before, just make sure you dont take too much off.

It isn't a live axle. (1 wheel drive) I have an original Manco spacer and it is between the rim and sprocket. I'm beginning to think these rims/sprocket didn't come with this kart.

The paint does look good. It's just a rattle can metallic flake from Duplicolor. I hope it holds up.

if you've got a few bucks to spend (and moderately decent fabbing skills), i'd convert that to a live axle. and if you don't have one already - get a torque converter (TAV2 from eBay). centrifugal clutches are evil.

This is for my 6yo son who really loves Mario Bros (Mario Kart). I think a live axle is overkill at this point. I'll upgrade it later if he needs it. The sprocket is really big. (80 tooth) I'll either have to raise the engine or replace it. I want the kart to be slow though. I was hoping for <20mph.

I know it is not a live axle, but it may have a solid rod that goes through the frame itself that both the right and left wheel ride on. Not an actual axle but a rod.

In that case, Raise your engine and while you're at it, move the motor mount closer to the wheel. Slap a 10 tooth clutch on it and you'll have a nice safe speed for your 6 year old.

I feel like a missing something very simple. I really don't think the kart has been modified in any way. It is a Manco kart with Manco rims and a Manco spacer. The parts brake downs don't go into great detail but it looks like my kart. Does anyone know what the normal length from the motor mount to the rim is?

You can always change that yourself with longer bolts and longer spacers. I buy grade 8 bolts for my axles. Trust me, they are pretty hard to break. My old kart, my brother decided to be funny and he didn't know I needed to fix the float in the carb, but when he tried starting it, it caught fire. There was gasoline loaded in the exhaust and piston, and when it fired over, it lit up and when I looked over, all I seen was a flash. Ruined the engine, but the bolts held up haha.

So I got some info. A guy on another forum measured the distance from the motor mount to where the axle bolt starts and mine is an inch and a half longer than normal. Our karts are pretty much identical other than that. Evidently I have an oddball kart and the wrong rims. No biggie, I'll just mod it but I was beginning to think I was crazy.
Seems like a good excuse to buy a welder!
