Is this engine upgrade going to be worth the trouble.

Well after fighting this junky Tecumseh on my sons fox cart I'm ready to swap it out. I was talking to my neighbor and he said I couldn't have a 9hp vanguard that runs good for free. It seems like it will fit but will take some work. The mount holes are way off so I will have to fab a plate.

But my bigger question is will be clutch hold up? It has a snowmobile style clutch set up. Also my son is only 8 so it might be to much to handle.

PICS!!!

Actually, it sounds like you have a CVT, which is great. However- Watch your shaft sized. Make sure the CVT drive unit from the old engine will fit the shaft on the new one before proceeding.

Send me your Tecumseh. I'll take it.

Here are some pics. And my other issue it won't fit unless the seat is all the way forward. I do have welder and no fab skill with metal but I'm sure I could figure something out. It looks like it will fit. There's a pulley on it but it's stuck and soaking in wd40.

The mount holes will definitely be different, being a 9hp. Toystory got it right. the 9hp probably has a 1-inch shaft and the tecumseh a 3/4".

Wait - I thought he said you couldn't have it? :roflol:

I totally agree with everything they said:
-The extra power will take some getting used to which, I'm sure, won't take long
-You have a bit of fab work ahead of you
-If it even fits, I feel it won't take long for your current clutch to self destruct & a 40 series can be expensive.

Now you have to decide if the pros outweigh the cons...

:roflol: Nice catch

It has good compression and good spark. I bought a new carb for it and its a pig to start. It usually takes a few shots of starting fluid. It will run ok but if you shut it off it wont start again.

I think I'm going to give the Vanguard back and sell the crappy pair of Tecumsehs on craigslist. I have a spare engine that has seen better days and came with the cart. The flywheel housing is trashed and all of the bolt holes are stripped out. And whatever I get out if the pair I will get a predator from HF.

GIVE the Vanny back? Whaddya, nuts? Oh, HECK no! Even if you can't use it on this project, you could either reserve it for another project, or spruce it up and flip it!

I've decided it would be crazy to give it back. I'm just going to shelf it and use it later.

harbor freight 90 amp flux core welder: $99. ability to make stuff fit and work the way you want it to: priceless. all it takes is a little time and trial and error and you will figure it out. put that 9hp "beast" on the kart (hard for me to call it a beast since i work with 56-82hp sled motors. lol). if you have to get a new driver (primary clutch for the torque converter), so be it. it will totally be worth it! :)

those harbor fright welders work great i have one and they are a good first welder to have you can learn on one just by welding with it you can get the hang of it as for the tecumseh have you adjusted the valves and stuff on it i got a free tecumseh from the person who rents one of my houses it had carb issues but ran a little i sold it for 40 dollars and put it on my friends go kart he let it sit because we couldn't get the darn carb to stop leaving gas or to even suck it to the motor well i was in a old abandoned house lately and in side of it was a box with 5hp Wisconsin parts well i took them and there was a carb i took it to my friends bolted it up and rigged up every thing now it will idle all day it starts on first pull all most every time
