I just snagged this thing off Craigslist for $175 and now I'm trying to figure out what I bought and figure out how it will be set up before I start ordering parts.

I ask if it's a Margay because I saw an old 2009 thread here where someone was trying to identify a frame that looked identical to mine, and one of the posters said Margay sprint. That and the spindles have "Margay" etched into them so I'm assuming it's possible. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The only question I have right now, besides who is the manufacturer, is should the spindles arms be at different angles like they are now or is the arm on my right spindle possibly bent? They both say Margay 12° so I assume they should be the same angle. (The tie rods are just sitting in place, unbolted)

Lol...that's not an A hole thing to say at all but nah I think I'll keep it for now and it'll make a nice winter project. It's definitely a Margay, and the right spindle is definitely bent after looking at it closer. Margay has 12° replacements on their site so I'm coming up with my first order now, spindle, tie rods, misc hardware ect. I'm sure there will be many different orders from them in the near future :)

Look inside the rt spindle mount for the S/N. I'm thinking Xpert III. Contact Keith @ Margay, he's been more than helpful to me.

Nice new toy!

Thanks bshinn! I submitted the form with the serial number a couple of hours ago, hopefully I hear something soon. I'm ready to get some parts on the way to me :)

Where are you seeing the spindles on Margay's site? Can you post the link, I can't find them.

Never mind, found them, I was only looking in the vintage section.

Well that was fast..I have a 1989 Margay Lynx AC. Thanks a lot for the help!

I'm ordering the replacement spindle today and probably new tie rods. Now I need to decide what motor to throw in it.

Oh and it did come with the floor pan, seat mounting struts and a couple motor mount clamps.

Lol..I know I think it was a steal, so cheap that I'll probably get the frame powder coated instead of painting it like I was planning on doing. I'm about to leave my house to go look at a 1997 CR80 project I just found online for $100! It's missing the gas tank & number plates and needs a top end but who cares about the plastics and I planned on rebuilding whatever motor I used either way. It seems like a pretty big parts list I have to buy to set it up as a shifter kart.

I'd think long and hard before I went the shifter route with that Lynx. If it's 1 1/8" tube it might be a little more than the frame can handle. Mine had some cracks around the motor area when I got it.

I wasn't 100% sure about using the CR motor either way but the seller made my decision for me. After setting it up with him and driving for 25 min to get it, the guy wasn't even there and he wanted me to wait for "15 minutes or so" for him to get back...So rather than wait around I headed back home and won't be going back.

I really wasn't planning on spending a lot on a motor but I found what appears to be a pretty good deal for a ready to run KT100 though it's about a 3 hour drive to get it. It's the motor, mount, clutch, 2 pipes and a starter for $500. Worth 6 hours of driving?

Winn, KT's are cool engines and that sounds like a decent price, but a few issues to keep in mind are:

You'll probably end up needing to have someone help you start the kart when trying to ride. Plus, that KT will be pretty loud and obnoxious sounding, so finding a place to ride it without the neighbors complaining/calling the cops might be an issue to consider too...

ps: You'd also need to move your sprocket over to the outer side of the axle-bearing/frame. (like the pic below) Does your axle have a keyway machined in there?

Not too worried about the noise aspect, my neighbors are very used to the sound of my 2 strokes tearing around the neighborhood. Yes the axle does have a 1/4 key so I don't think moving the sprocket over would be an issue. One of my biggest concerns is cost, I'm trying to spend as little as possible on this project, which is probably the only thing keeping me from buying the KT right now. My wife can help me start it if need be so I'm not worried about that, though it is nice to be able to pull a rope & go when wanting to go for a ride around the neighborhood.

I'm still debating, I also found a built flat head Briggs running on alcohol for $200. Which is about an hour away compared to 3 hours away. Which I'd also have to buy a mount for...decisions decisions.

The new Mooresville Motorplex has no problems with KT-100's & other 2 strokes running @ the track. But throw a built Clone or Animal out there & the noise police come running. 90 dba measured at the front stretch is all they allow, and that ain't all that loud.

As for that flat head Briggs..........run down to the local Harbor Freight, drop a Franklin on a Predator & another coup'la Franklins in go fast goodies and you have a screaming new motor running on $3.20/gal gas.

That KT is stuck in my head. If I can make it there before he sells it I'm going to get it. Can you tell from the pic what brand clutch it has and possibly the mount too?

Ok bshinn if you were really interested in the KT let me know and I'll get you the Craigslist info. I'm not sure if there are any rules against posting links to items on Craigslist or else I'd just post it here.

The mount on it is for an international frame so it won't work for me so that's another $100 or so I'd have to drop from what I found. Plus I would need a gas tank, air cleaner and whatever else. It still seems like an awesome deal to me for everything that is included but it's just more than I want to spend, I got off track with my "budget rebuild" when I decided on the KT. I'm grabbing that flat head Briggs instead, I found a fuel source not far from me and at least I won't need assistance to get it running. Best part is the price, got him down to $175 already.
