is there 2 different size dingo 285's

Found what I hope to be my next project, but the engine compartment appears to be considerably smaller than the on I already have.

As for the size of the kart, AFAIK, the frames are the same but, they did have two different engines, a 5hp & an 8hp...

Yes there is a difference between the 5 and 8hp Dingos. The 5 hp is shorter, springs in the front spindles, 30 series clutches, rear tires are 18.5X8x8 and the top speed was 35 mph. The 8hp was longer, no spindle springs, 40 series clutches, 22x11x8 rear tires and 42 mph top end. Both would climb or go through anything we through at them. My brother had the 5 and I had the 8. those were the very first things I bought with my first credit card in 1987 at 21 years old.

Thanks Denny! Are you sure about the clutch sizes? I have an 8 hp the I put a 16 hp on and the clutch was a 30 series until I put a 40 on it.

Positive! Back then I had a tough time getting a belt for it and that was why.

I have learned I have a Dingo model 388-28.

Now that I feel dumb! I thought I had a dingo 285 for the last 4 years.

I have a question. Are all 5 and 6 hp versions on the smaller chassis?

there are few different chassis, personally I doubt there's any difference between a 285 and a 288 from the same year though
(logically, it would be too expensive to have two different toolsets to make basically the same kart)

but IDK for sure

Maybe Kartfab can chime in, Grant had several different Dingos in his hands, he'd be the one to ask IMHO

you can tell by looking at the clutch on the motor shaft.

I bought a dingo with an 8 hp briggs 1" shaft that had a comet 30 series on it 2 yrs ago.

Just google '30 series torque converter drive unit' and '40 series torque converter drive unit' blakeowitz? also did a great video on youtube about how to ID your torque converter.

the 40 series bell is giant compared to the 30 series, and the comet 40 series has this big welded nut to the outside sheave.

there was no 289 to my knowledge.. a 389 came with a series 40 TC atttached with belt #6814 which is a comet 203785A
meant for 8 3/16" center to center distance though.
