okay im confused as to why home depot is misleading their customers. i was curious as to how much the big cans of Xylene solvent cost there, so a quick search on their site revealed a $20 price tag. i decided to read the "features" and one of them happened to be "non-toxic formula" while zooming in on the image of the can clearly reads "harmful or fatal if swallowed."

soo are they serious, or do i smell a fraudulent law suit? :p

Ya, all these types of thinners are deadly if inhaled/ingested......kinda funny though. Who in their right mind would see that it says 'non toxic' and use it as such.

Holy, Hannah- Did they ever screw up!!! Xylene is about as NON-non-toxic as you're gonna get! I have used Xylene many times in the past, and that stuff will FUDGE you UP!

I wonder which baggy-pantsed, minimum-wage, Xbox playing, basement-dwelling, LOOGAN did the write-up???:ack2::eek:ut:

Edit- I just submitted a review that outghta get somebody's attention...

Moderating Home Depot now? :roflol:

Speaking of Xylene, has anyone used it to soak carbs and engine parts? I know you need to remove plastic and rubber pieces beforehand. However, say you had to wait to buy a carb rebuild the next morning and you let the carb sit all night. Seems like compressed carb cleaner (which contains Xylene) would work better when accompanied by a 12 hour pre soak. Any input?

Edit: If this stuff really was "non toxic" , I would assume it doesn't get the job done since it doesn't have a strong smell that causes nervous system damage. lolol

When I submitted the review, it said it could take up to 48 hours to appear. Probably because they want to look them over first- which is okay be me. As long as SOMEBODY gets the message!

Clean your carbs by boiling in lemon juice for 20 minutes. Best ever IMO. Nothing is better.

I've used the lemon juice method and I've used the carb cleaner method, and they both work about the same for me. Plus, the lemon juice method is impractical for me since no one else in my house wants to smell the fumes from evaporating lemon juice. lol. Also, over soaking it in lemon juice will corrode the aluminum. I learned that the hard way when it corroded the threads on a fuel strainer bowl on my carburetor. Xylene doesn't pose that threat, so I guess that's why I use it now lol.

You soaked your parts for days in lemon juice not boil for 20 minutes like you should have.

Also never soaked the carb in lemon juice. Boil it for 20 minutes.

Look for a cheap hot plate you can use in the garage next to the smelly carb cleaner. Or just use carb cleaner if thats what you like.

This carb was nasty. $6 and 20 minutes later it looks like this.

Just go to Autozone and buy a can of carb dip. It's like $35 though.

Wow. I just got a form letter response back from somebody at the Depot. My "review has been rejected"! I saw that coming- but the ad still has the same error! Towards the end of it, it says somebody may be contacting me to further discuss... Hope so. That's just insane!

They don't want people seeing how wrong they are. What is the point of having a review section if they only put the positive reviews in

diyXyleneSoak.

1 old wood stain can
1 bottom half of a large sized gatorade bottle
1 gallon of Xylene

Drill enough holes in the bottom of the gatorade bottle to allow the Xylene to fill it and string the top with a wire. voila.
