Both my kids have iPod touches. The can send SMS, mms etc. and emails provided wifi is available. They also receive alerts from game etc. so I assume tapatalk would work too.

Can they text non apple stuff?
That didnt cross my mind till I was talking to my brother about the ipod touches, his wife said she though they could only communicate with other apple devises.

Pretty sure they can text to anything. Kinda like Skype.

I have a Ipod touch which I use all the time for listening to music.
As for a phone, I would like an Iphone, but I manage to destroy them like they are going out of fashion. My current one has little melted marks all over it from welding. Fallen out of my overalls pocket and fallen into about 120l of 60 grade oil. Left it sitting for a while and it still goes. Once again fell out of my pocket when I was working on top of a 777 dump truck. Fell about 4-5m on to the concrete floor. Looked like it exploded, put it all together and its still going today. Its not a brick either, it has a touch sreen and all that jazz. Pretty amazing phone for $150.

Mine lives in my electronics draw

On that note, our waste oil tank is full of phones
People leaning over the top to check the level and it slides out of there top pocket
And plop its disappeared into 10'000lt of oil

I keep mine in my toolbox while at work, too. I'd end up beating the thing to death if I didn't.
