Hello all.

I'm Derek from Des Moines, IA. I just joined here after reading about this forum on OMB. I have (what I think) is an old Bird mini with a 2.5hp Greyhound on it. It runs and drives is about to get a nice paint makeover in a few weeks.

I recently purchased an old Briggs Flathead and currently have every bolt out of it restoring it. This is all new to me, I just kinda dove right in, learning as I go. I would like to build my own chopper frame very soon and joined the forums to look for guidance along the way.

Thanks everyone! It's nice to be here.

omb is against governor removal without having a billet flywheel and billet connecting rods that they sell on their website. Conflict of interest IMO. They delete posts that talk about running a billet rod without a billet flywheel. They do not condone poboy ways of doing things, rather, just buy their parts and it will be okay to support their forum if you do that.

Welcome! What did OMB say about us?

Probably that we are a bunch of reckless morons that endanger bus loads of nuns and school children and are steadily being picked off by our exploding Chinese flywheels.

You can get banned over there for posting ANYTHING about running an ungoverned engine without a Billet flywheel and rod (which you can conveniently purchase from them).

I think it was in reference to a thread regarding governor removal if I'm not mistaken. I just remember someone saying "in the other forum" and referenced here so I came to check this one out.
Wonder if it was a thread that Doc Sprocket wrote up a few years back. In it he says that the flywheel will not go nuclear at 3601 RPM, and generally you can go higher than stock.

In fairness even heymow (racing mower forum) and race rules state you cannot have an unhooked governor and stock flywheel. But they are just so the racers are safer. Do it at your own discretion.

Yes, It was the Doc Sprocket thread! I'm on the fence about my governor. I would like to keep it on my flathead if I can figure out where to put my throttle and keep the kill and choke functions on the Choke a matic. I posted this question in the engine forums here as well as OMB but no hits either place.

I have the engine completely torn down and about ready to reassemble so now is the time to make a decision. I know exactly what to do to remove the governor and install linkages I just would PREFER to have the governor intact, but not if it's going to cause me a bunch of fits in trying to make the throttle work right, idle issues, and generally waste my time. :)

It's ironic they say say no talk about modded motors with no gov... But then willing to allow talk on modding the gov for higher rpm.... Out to 5k and no billet parts.

Here, it's warning on use of modded engines(clones typically), changing valve springs without a billet con-rod.... We have figured this out by a number of sacrifices to the engine gods..... Via valve springs....

This reply leads me to another question. Does the intake or the exhaust get the longer valve spring? I would assume the longer is for exhaust but..... When I tore the engine down I put all bolts, valves etc in cardboard templates like a good boy and then knocked over the one holding the valves, springs and retainers and they popped out. Typical me. :)

I always assumed they were the same length.

But what do i know :D

I put the longer and stiffer one on the exhaust side because that seems logical. On my model, there is a clear and definite length and strength difference. The longer stiffer spring has 6 evenly spaced coils and the shorter, weaker spring has 3 coils that are more squished together on one end. Your model may be different of course.

Old briggs flathead specifically. I know you referenced clones when stating about sacrificing springs but this happened to me while reassembling my old flathead. It's all sorted now. I had to remove them again to dump some ATF down the valve guides to loosen up the stiffness. They move nicely now so it's time to button her back up.
